As the pandemic is forcing people to stay at home for a longer period of time, activities and social interactions also moved from physical to digital world. This shift of change revealed the unfavorable nature of Indonesians’ netizen behaviors in the internet, labelled as ‘The rudest netizen’ in Southeast Asia for their ferociousness in online communication. This paper aims to investigate the perception of Indonesian internet users at the use of taboo words used in humor in intercultural online communication. Primary and secondary data were collected by observational method and qualitative descriptive method was used to present the analysis. The finding of this paper suggested that generally, 75% of the audiences on TikTok and YouTube have positive perception toward the usage of taboo words in public setting by taking context awareness, timing and intent into consideration.
The dynamic of language can be seen from the constant emergence of new vocabulary, which mainly spread among teenagers. Swearing, cursing, and other taboo words are daily among teenagers. Compared to the previous generation, like those born in the 90s, the prominent use of taboo words is now more evident. This study investigated how the benefits of swear terms among high schoolers differ from undergraduate students. Data were collected through direct online interviews via Zoom call. Each participant was asked about the frequently used swear words and their reasons. The data were presented in the qualitative descriptive method. The result showed that high school students use swear words relating to sexuality, animal terms abuse, sexist terms abuse, intellect-based terms abuse, insult, and slur, while college students used the same categories of swear words, except sexist terms abuse. Accordingly, high school students used swear words to show they were mature enough, such as self-expression, humor, social bonding among friends, and a new normal in teenagers’ lives. Meanwhile, college students used swear words as humor, self-expression, and pain relief.
This research aims to analyze the use of diction in the poem After The Abortion by Charlotte Puddifoot. The poem deals with matters of abortion experienced by women. The process of aborting a pregnancy intentionally is a mechanism to make a fetus in the uterus unable to develop or stay. In a simple concept abortion is a killing. The research method is a descriptive qualitative method with close reading technique to collect data. Data were classified into four general types of diction: abstract, concrete, denotative and connotative. The finding shows the use of abstract, concrete, denotative and connotative are prevalent throughout the poem, with concrete diction being the majority. Each line of the poem is carefully structured with effective diction to send the author’s message to the reader. Abstract, concrete, denotative and connotative dictions are used to create imagery and vivid pictures of the procedures. The poem carries a heavy lesson of physical and long-term emotional damages caused by abortion.
