Nowadays, China is in the period of industrialization, modernization and urbanization. The investment to the infrastructure is increasing which requires the support from construction innovation. Construction innovation is project-based cooperative innovation. The innovation based cooperation not only focuses inside the boundary of project, but also emphasizes the long-term strategic cooperation among the participants of innovation network. Therefore, it is significant to explore the Critical Success Factors (CSFs) of construction innovation based on the viewpoint of strategic cooperation. This paper first presents the definition and characteristics of construction innovation. By tracking the international frontiers, the authors studied a great number of literatures on the influence elements of construction innovation. Combining the effort of literature review and expert interview, this present paper identified 20 CSFs for construction innovation, which is verified and perfected by a case study in the end. Construction innovation has gradually been the focus of academic and industrial circles; however, most relevant literatures focus on the study of innovation modes and the driving forces of construction innovation. Research on the construction innovation based on the strategic cooperation is few. In this perspective, this paper first analyses the definition and characteristics of construction innovation. Combining the efforts of tracking and studying the international frontier literatures and expert interview, this paper identifies the Critical Success Factors(CSFs) of construction innovation from the viewpoint of strategic cooperation. A case study is also presented to verify and perfect the CSFs identified.
A new mathematical equation is introduced in this paper:fs f where W is the size at any convenient unit of time t, s is the initial size, / is the upper asympotic size, k is the growth coefficient (k > 0), and b is the constant. The new equation encompasses the logistic equation and therefore should be considered as a generalized version of the classical logistic equation. With its additional fourth parameter b, the new equation yields an unfixed value of inflexion point which enables it to possess good flexibility for depicting diverse growth patterns. In order to evaluate the fitness of the new growth equation, some commonly encountered models are compared to the new one using 12 sets of somatic growth data of mammalian species including hamster, rat, vole, pika, mouse, rabbit, cattle, and bear. The new equation possesses excellent fitness to each data set, suggesting that it is worth being considered by growth data analysts.
Guanxi, a Chinese term that defines social networks of power and benefits, can be divided into inter-personal and inter-organizational relationships. Guanxi significantly influences construction innovation in China. Many studies have examined the relationship between guanxi and construction innovation at the project or organizational level. However, few of these studies explain how guanxi might affect an individual’s innovative behaviour from a double-level perspective. This paper builds on social capital theory and social exchange theory to examine guanxi’s role in motivating innovative behaviour in a China-specific construction context. It investigates the main effects of inter-personal relationships on innovative behaviour, the mediating effects of knowledge sharing, and the cross-level moderating effects of inter-organizational relationships. These elements were tested using a survey that received 178 responses from 35 different organizations. The results were analysed using Hierarchical Linear Modelling (HLM) and revealed that inter-personal relationships have positive influences on innovative behaviour, thus highlighting the partial mediating effects of knowledge sharing. In addition, the analyses showed that inter-organizational relationships augment inter-personal relationships and knowledge sharing on innovative behaviour by cross-level interaction. The research findings enhance an understanding of guanxi and innovative behaviour in China-specific construction project settings, as well as verifying the significance of guanxi in stimulating innovative behaviour.
The rapid urbanization in China has already put heavy pressures on imperfect infrastructure, especially for fundamental urban functions such as power and water supply, traffic, education, and healthcare. The emergence of smart cities can help cope with the rapidly expanding demands on urban infrastructure. However, the development of smart cities in China is just in its infancy, and there is still a lack of clear understanding of the development path of smart cities. This article focuses on the development of smart cities in China. It aims to (a) judge whether there is spatial autoregression in the construction of smart cities in 83 Chinese cities and (b) identify key influencing factors in the development of smart cities in China through a spatial econometric model developed by GeoDa software. The results show that there exists spatial autoregression in the development of smart cities in China. Four key influencing factors (governmental support, innovative level, economic development, and human capital) are identified. Based on these findings, suggestions for future promoting development of smart cities in China are put forward. This research can deepen the understanding of the spatial effects of smart cities and provide valuable decision-making references for policy makers.
