Abstract. The study was conducted to determine the acceptability of the residents of Barangay Casile, Cabuyao, Laguna, Philippines in transforming their locality into an ecoagri tourism site. A total of 241 residents participated in the data collection using a survey questionnaire and interviews. Barangay Casile is an agricultural area and is also noted for its natural heritage such as the Matang Tubig River and Falls and the Marcos Twin Tower. Because of this, the local government unit of Cabuyao City plans to develop the area as a nature-based tourism destination specifically as an eco-agri tourism site. The survey revealed that the respondents agreed on the proposition of transforming their area into agri-tourism site. Cultural acceptability ranks the highest which means that the locals are open on the possible effects on their culture that the development could bring them. Economic and social acceptability were also ranked high because of the income they could get from the influx of tourists. Environmental acceptability is the least agreeable because most of the respondents were environment sensitive and are concerned with the changes to the natural façade of their area. It can be concluded that agri-tourism development involving local residents provides control over the development and management of the project.
Water quality can affect the ecosystem at several trophic levels. It is very important for an ecosystem to have healthy water bodies as lives of aquatic species depend upon them. Taal, with a small lake located in the southern part of Luzon in the Philippines is teeming with aquatic resources, yet it is observed that its water quality is deteriorating. The lake is surrounded by several municipalities with tributaries contributing to its quality. This study evaluated Taal lake ecosystem in six sample sites in terms of physical and chemical attributes utilizing secondary data obtained from the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR). Mean values of pH, temperature and Total Soluble Solids (TSS) were within the standards set by the agency. However, there was a slight increase in Dissolved Oxygen (DO) and a low Biological Oxygen Demand (BOD). There is high nitrogen and heavy metal contamination with one highly contaminated site. This was attributed to high municipal and kitchen waste disposal and high amounts of fertilizers used in fields. Taal lake aquatic ecosystem can be classified as severely polluted based on the chemical parameters. Nitrate, phosphate, oil and grease, pH, temperature and DO levels vary significantly from site to site. Levels of arsenic, chromium, TSS and BOD do not show any significant difference among the sites.
The Christian Foundation for Children and Aging (CFCA) is an organization that responds to environmental awareness and education through an environmental recollection. Environmental recollection was conducted among twenty student respondents who are scholars of CFCA. Using a researcher-developed questionnaire, data on the level of knowledge on four environmental issues: global warming, climate change, waste management and resource preservation and the action plans were gathered. Results show that the student respondents are well informed of the environmental issues prior to the environmental recollection but a significant increase in the level of knowledge was found after the environmental recollection. The students strongly agree on the plan to preserve the resources and the proper waste management procedures. All the students get information on environmental issues from their teachers, while majority also obtain them from media and seminars. Other information was obtained from home through their parents, classmates, and pamphlets. There is significant association between prior level of knowledge in waste management, prior level of knowledge in resource preservation and the post level of knowledge in all environmental issues and number of sources from which they get the information. Environmental recollection is a good tool in awakening the students in the current environmental situation. Keywords - environmental recollection, environmental education, environmental sensitivity, environmental awareness, responsible behaviour, preservation
