The cognitive efficiency of 14 divers was studied during 1-hour exposure to water of 40°F (4.4°C) and 78°F (25.6°C). Reasoning ability was tested using a sentence comprehension task presented at the beginning and end of each test session. Vigilance was tested by requiring subjects to detect the onset of a faint peripheral light during the performance of a two-man pipe assembly task. Memory was tested by requiring subjects to learn a number of “facts” during the dive, with retention tested by recall and recognition on land, after a 40-min delay. Despite a mean drop in rectal temperature of 1.3°F (0.72°C), neither reasoning nor vigilance was impaired. Memory performance did deteriorate, though it is suggested that this may reflect a peripheral context-dependent memory effect. It is concluded that a well-motivated subject may be cognitively unimpaired despite a marked drop in deep body temperature.
The structure of the heptacyanovanadate(III) ion, V(CN)74-, has been shown to be a pentagonal bipyramid from a singlecrystal X-ray crystallographic study of K4V(CN)7-2H20.1,2 Although this anion had been prepared in a number of studies,3-11 its structure, frequently presumed to be octahedral,,had never been explicitly determined. The possibility of seven-coordination, however, had indeed been recognized by several groups of workers.6-11 Since this same material was 'most likely prepared by Alexander and Gray7 (although they formulated it as a hexacyanide, their analytical results are essentially perfect for K4V(CN)7-2H20) and since they reported difficulty in repeating the synthesis, a separate and detailed elaboration of the synthesis and properties of K4V-(CN)7-2H20 appears warranted. Further impetus stems from reports that anhydrous10 and monohydrated9 forms of the same material have been prepared. The V(CN)74-anion need not necessarily have the same structure in these several com-
This research was designed to assess the personality profiles associated with law enforcement officials from communities of varying size. Participants were from three separate law enforcement agencies (H=40). The agencies were selected based on their community size/type. Participants were from an urban department, a rural department or a college campus department. All participants were administered the Employee Personality Inventory (EPI) to assess their personality characteristics. Analysis revealed a significant difference among departments on three of the five personality dimensions measured by the EPI.
