Heats of dilution of ethanol, n-propanol, n-butanol, t-butanol and heats of mixing of the various pairs of alcohols in aqueous solution have been measured at 25°C and concentrations of <2 mol kg-'. The various enthalpic pair and triplet interaction coefficients hij and hcj have been evaluated from the experimental data and compared with values which can be extracted from other published calorimetric studies. All hii and hcj values are positive and show the dependence on alkyl chain length and conformation expected for a hydrophobic pair interaction. The results are discussed in terms of several models proposed for the hydrophobic interaction.* Cassel and Wood also report h,, = -354 J mol-' (mol kg-')-' and hXm= + 21 J md-l (mol kg-1)-2 for aqueous urea, in very close agreement with our estimates: -350+ 3 and +21 +2. 13
scite is a Brooklyn-based organization that helps researchers better discover and understand research articles through Smart Citations–citations that display the context of the citation and describe whether the article provides supporting or contrasting evidence. scite is used by students and researchers from around the world and is funded in part by the National Science Foundation and the National Institute on Drug Abuse of the National Institutes of Health.
