In this paper wepresenr rhe results (!fa chemical in~estigation by neutron activation analysis of sherds of difliwnt kinds of' bird kotylai, bird bowls and related wares excavated in Kalabaktepe, a hill of the ancient city of Miktus. A neM' archaeological classificatirin ofthis well-known group of Archaic ceramics of enstern Greece is presented. A number of' kiln wasters of misfired rlessels Jrom Kulabaktepi. reiwaled a characteristic local puttern. This pattern helped to c1urif-G the provenance of'sorne ofthe bird bowls classified archaeologically us qforicntalizing type: they have been made in Miletus. But bird kotylai and bird bawls in the 'standard fabric' as wvll as other archaeologically related zlessels show u diflkrent chemical pattern of unknown provenunce.
