Curator of the Cannabis Museum
Although Cannabis has been used as medicine since ancient times its use did not become popular in Europe or the US until the 1840s, after research of its therapeutic value began appearing in the medical literature. From 1840 to 1900 there were more than 100 articles published that recommended Cannabis for one disorder or another (Walton, 1938). Cannabis indica, Cannabis sativa, Cannabis americana and Indian hemp were familiar components of medicines used by physicians prior to the passage of the Marihuana Tax Act, 1937. In 1938, Sasman listed 28 pharmaceuticals, which contained Cannabis indica.
In this edition of Collections Corner you will learn how and why a couple of keywords added onto the description of an obscure Cannabis collectable can change its eBay auction result by hundreds of percent. Also explained is the history of the terms Nostrums and Quackery as the reader is taken on a tour of the collectables market as explained through the history of the Cannabis containing medicine of antiquity, Piso's Cure. The stuff we collect does reveal a lot about us. We make very sentimental decisions when we bid at auction. Stuff is like a touchstone to our past both collectively and individually.
