It was carried out through semi-structured interviews with police officers with experiences in cases with lethality, comparing with the speeches of others who did not experience such cases. The results demonstrate how institutional discourses on the use of police force corroborate the distortions in the understanding of the police function and consequently, the increase of violence. Based on the results obtained in the interviews and their correlation with the literature of Foucault (2012) and Agamben (2010) we will understand that the police officers of the metropolitan area of Belém, use lethal force as a means of defense. They are supported by the legal discourse of self-defense, even if the reports do not present the necessary need, being convinced that this is the best course of action to protect themselves and the society, because the death of the "killable being"has a social function that supposedly removes the criminalization of the police conduct.
