To increase robustness of wet vehicle clutches extensive knowledge about damage mechanism within tribological stressed clutch friction contact are necessary, to derive suitable requirements for clutch development. Therefore, on the one hand comprehensive investigations on component-, unit- and vehicle test level are necessary which offer, amongst other information, learnings about the clutch component causing a possible clutch failure. On the other hand, component analyses have to be done, which make it possible detecting wear sensitive component elements of the component composition itself. Present analysis show results of damage mechanism caused by a non-permissible water impact and related molecular changes in clutch oil and tribological stressed functional steel plate surfaces. Analysis were done with electrospray-ionisation mass spectrometry and time-of-flight secondary ion mass spectrometry.
