The adoption of an educational model that is geared towards equipping students with key life skills involves a shift in approaches and actions to be undertaken in schools and the transformation of the roles to be performed by teachers. Previous review and analysis of the tasks that should be performed by compulsory education teachers, as established by educational regulations and research, have made it possible for experts to define and validate teaching competences in this study, and adapt them to the current educational context. The research findings allow us to propose nine teaching competences that can be classified into two types. On the one hand, a number of key competences related to tasks that promote learning and the development of key life skills in students. And, on the other, a set of generic and transversal competences which, despite not being directly related to learning processes, contribute to improving them. Experts confirm the relevance of the proposed competences, the accuracy of their definitions and the adequacy of their scope. This research has significant implications both for teaching training and practice, as it allows to set educational goals tailored to fit what today's society demands from compulsory education.
