Background Stevia is a natural sweetener which is used as sugar substitute. It has been suggested that stevia may be anticariogenic. However, there is limited research in this regard. Hence, the present study was designed to assess reduction in S. mutans in stevia and xylitol chewing gums. The aim of this study is to evaluate the effectiveness of stevia and xylitol chewing gums on salivary Streptococcus mutans count. Material and Methods A randomized triple blinded clinical study with a crossover design included twenty healthy children aged 8-13 years with decayed, missing, and filled teeth (dmft)/DMFT index score ≥ 3. Before the test, unstimulated saliva was collected. Children divided into Group I and II were given Stevia and Xylitol chewing gums respectively. Saliva samples were then collected at 15 min (just after spitting) and after 1 h. The amount of S. mutans in saliva was evaluated using a selective media (TYCSB). The data were subjected to statistical analysis using statistical software IBM SPSS statistics 20.0 (IBM Corporation, Armonk, NY, USA) Results Reduction in S. mutans was seen from baseline to 1 hour in both groups in trial and crossover design though intergroup comparison was not statistically significant. There was reduction seen from baseline to 15 minutes and 15 minutes to 1 hour in xylitol and stevia group both in trial and crossover design which was statistically significant. Conclusions Stevia containing chewing gum is equally effective to Xylitol chewing gum in reducing salivary S. mutans counts. Key words: Stevia, Xylitol , S. mutans.
A wide range of artificial and synthetic products have been replaced by the natural products for daily use. The natural products are believed to have more advantages and less adverse effects. The plant products such as stem, flower, fruit, seed, leaves, etc have been experimented. Stevia rebaudiana Bertoni, a perennial shrub which is a native of South America. During World War II, England used it as a sweetener as sugar was not available. By 1970, it was used as a sweetener in Japan. In 1994, US approved steviol glycosides as functional ingredient in dietary supplements. It is non-caloric sweetener which is 200-300 times sweeter than table sugar. Its use as a sweetener was approved by FDA in 2011. There is growing evidence supporting the use of stevia in diabetes, hypertension, weight loss, etc. Dental caries is an infectious microbiologic disease of the tooth that results in localized dissolution and destruction of calcified tissues. There has been an increased interest on antimicrobial and anti-plaque activity of stevia mouth rinse and chewing gums. Researches on the aqueous and alcoholic extracts of stevia have also been conducted to evaluate its potential advantages in the dental field. A bstract Context The etiology of molar incisor hypomineralization (MIH) has been extensively explored. Recently, the effect of drugs used in aerosol therapy in childhood has been implicated as a possible factor in the development of MIH. Aim A case-control study was conducted in children aged 6–13 years to determine the association between aerosol therapy and other factors in the development of MIH. Materials and methods A total of 200 children were examined for the presence of MIH according to the European Academy of Paediatric Dentistry (EAPD) criteria (2003). Their mothers or primary caregivers were interviewed regarding the preterm history and perinatal, and postnatal history of the child up to 3 years of life. Statistical analysis The collected data were subjected to statistical analysis using descriptive and inferential analyses. The p -value ≤ 0.05 was considered statistically significant. Results Statistically significant association was observed between the development of MIH and exposure to aerosol therapy in childhood and the use of antibiotics before 1 year of life. Conclusion Exposure to aerosol therapy and antibiotics before 1 year of age are risk factors in MIH. Children who had aerosol therapy and antibiotics are 2.01 times and 1.61 times more prone to MIH. The combination of attitude & behavior is the main recipe for a culture of patient safety. The research or availability of data in this eld of home care is very limited. In this study, the perception of staff towards patient safety has been measured & analyzed to list the contribution of how the culture of safety dimensions explains patient safety in the organization. The online survey was conducted with the help of a questionnaire amongMethod: the healthcare professionals in a homecare setting in Abu Dhabi. The data were further analyzed with the help of JMP software, and descriptive statistics & regression were used to assess the study's outcome. All the six pillars of the questionnaires were scored, and all the pillars wereResults: above 60 per cent as mentioned in g. 2. Overall patient safety score was observed with 81 per cent positive response. Out of 31 sub-questions to be tested, 26 (84%) parameters received positive responses by 60% & above staff voting for positive perception. The rest of the 5 (16%) parameters had received less than 60% of employees rated positively. Multiple regression was conducted, and predictor variables such as the work area, manager/ supervisor, communication, reporting of safety events & higher management are found to have a signicant effect on patient safety culture (Rsq=0.53, p 3005). Accredited homecare has several factors that signicantly impact patient safety, including leadership,Conclusion: further reecting on teamwork & communication from management. Hence the leadership indicators & strategies have to be continued, which include teamwork, building sound teams with mutual trust, and collaboration being an essential part of managers' work with patient safety. However, reporting of events is observed to hitting negatively in the organization & can be taken as an opportunity for improvement.
