-The aphidophagous syrphid fly, Episyrphus balteatus (de. Geer), actively visits the Japanese maple, Acer palmatum Thunb., in early spring and oviposits adjacent to colonies of 2 maple aphids, Periphyllus californiensis (Shinji) and Yamatocaltis tokyoensis (Takahashi). Female flies, in the field, chose small, young colonies with nymphs and wingless adult aphids for their oviposition sites rather than older colonies including winged adults. Same tendency was clearly observed in the experiments with models. It was demonstrated experimentally that they can discriminate between the wingless and winged adult models. It is suggested that females of the hover fly assess the value of aphid colonies as the food resource of their offspring.
Six new mycetophilid species from three genera belonging to the tribe Exechiini are described: Anatella prominens on a fungus of the Polyporaceae, Allodia bipexa and Allodia conifera on fungi of the Russulaceae, Allodia quadrata on fungi of the Hygrophoraceae, Tricholomataceae, Rhodophyllaceae, Russulaceae and Fistulinaceae, Allodia laccariae on a fungus of the Tricholomataceae, and Cordyla bidenticulata on a fungus of the Boletaceae. Their characteristic male genitalia are illustrated. Cordyla flaviceps Staeger, Cordyla fusca Meigen and Cordyla pusilla Edwards are newly recorded from Japan.
The leafmining agromyzid flies collected firom the Repub]ic of El Salvador and the Republic of Guatemala and preserved in the California Academy of Sciences, San Francisco, were examined, Of the 22 species in eight genera that were identified, seven are new to science: Ciphiompia gracilimentula, Agrompza mqgaepistoma, Jopanagromyxa nebulijlera, dnlycomyza paratlela, and Liriomyza pectinimentula from El Salvador, and Mblanagrompza dolabrata and Phytobia guatemalensis from Guatemala. The remainder. except for Jlzpanagrompza arnaudi Sasakawa, 1963, are new to the El Salvador or Guatemala fauna. The species originally described as Agronz;;za approximata Frost, 1936 is transferred to Japanagromyza.
Four new species of Noonamyia abdominalis, euphlebia, sabahna and pleuralis, and Phobeticomyia bicolor n. sp. and Poecilomyza punctata n. sp. are described from Malaysia by the senior author, and eight species are new to the Malaysian fuana. This is the first report of our study on the family Lauxaniidae of Malaysia based on the specimens collected by the senior author under the 1986 and 1988 joint Japanese-Malaysian projects of the "Systematic and Ecological Surveys on Some Plant-parasitic Microarthropods in Peninsular Malaysia and Sabah". Up to the present, sixteen species of lauxaniid-flies have been recorded fragmentary from Malaya by Walker (1856), Kert&sz (1900), Malloch (1927& 1929 and others. Six new species of the genera Noonam$a, Phobeticomyia and Poecilomyza are described in this paper. Judging from the results of our study, it may be considered that some more species of Noonamyia occur in the forests in Sabah.
