Spinal cord decompression with spinal stabilization enhances the rehabilitation of patients with unstable spine and completes spinal cord injuries. Our experience shows improvement in neurological function in patients with spinal cord decompression despite the challenges of instrumentation in Sub-Saharan Africa.
The paper reports the tissue distribution of the enzyme arginase in three different Cichlids: Tilapia zilli, Sarotherodon galilaeus and Oreochromis niloticus, from the Aiba and Osinmo reservoirs, located in the southwestern Nigeria. The tissues of S. galilaeus showed very high activity of arginase as compared with the other two species. The liver of O. niloticus and the gut of T. zillii showed very high activity of arginase in the Osinmo reservoir. The high arginase activity observed in the tissues of these organisms is attributed to ureotelism and is similar to the result obtained for tilapia, Alcolapia grahami, from lake Magadi, Kenya.
This work reports the seasonal change and variation in the physico-chemical properties of the water inOsinmo reservoir in Southwestern Nigeria and the effects on tissue distribution of the metabolic enzymes, arginase and rhodanese are the two fish species (Clarias gariepinus and Heterotis niloticus) collected from the reservoir. This study was carried out to correlate the activities of the enzymes with metabolic status of the fishes and physico-chemical properties of the water. The enzyme activities varied significantly in the different tissues of the C. gariepinus. The liver showed the highest mean value of activity and the intestine had the least mean value. In the H. niloticus, they showed the highest mean value of activity while the bile showed the lowest mean value. The activities of the two enzymes in the water reservoir were determined at regular intervals over a period of ten months in 2011, spanning both dry and rainy seasons. The activities of the enzymes varied significantly through the two seasons. Arginase was at its peak in June while rhodanese was at its peak in September. The distribution of urea in the reservoir varied significantly in the period studied; the highest mean value was in July while the lowest was in February.
scite is a Brooklyn-based organization that helps researchers better discover and understand research articles through Smart Citations–citations that display the context of the citation and describe whether the article provides supporting or contrasting evidence. scite is used by students and researchers from around the world and is funded in part by the National Science Foundation and the National Institute on Drug Abuse of the National Institutes of Health.
