In fulfilling the children's rights at the communities and local authorities' level, the concept of child-friendly environment is as much important as planning a residential area. Various efforts were made to achieve the concept since 1996 when the UNICEF Child-Friendly Cities initiative was established. Part of the main ideas is to attain sustainable cities and communities. This study therefore aims at evaluating the residential and schools' surrounding environment in relation to child-friendly indicators. It employs a case study method, using Precinct 11 in Putrajaya as the case study based on its characteristics and the application of the Analytical Hierarchy Process (AHP) method, as well as embracing the principles of conducive environment for its inhabitants. Primary data were mostly gathered through site observations which examined the sites' characteristics, capturing images of the surrounding environment and its elements, as well as analyzing the children's movement behavior at the selected locations during a two-week field survey. The investigation had also involved monitoring primary school children's movement behavior. An observation checklist based on child-friendliness indicators was applied during the survey which encompasses indicators like facilities and physical environment. The study found that the residential areas and schools' surrounding environment are responsive to children's needs. Results demonstrated that features like signage, playground and pedestrian paths contribute to child-friendly environment. Other than that, the study revealed that several surrounding aspects like distance, connection to pedestrian's facilities and entrance to school have impact on child-friendliness environment. The study therefore concluded that child-friendly indicators should be incorporated into residential planning in promoting a better quality of life for children in urban neighborhoods.
This research aims to find out whether or not the application of the story mapping technique can improve the writing skills of Grade X students of SMK Negeri 3 Palu. The type of this research was a quasi-experimental research design that involved two groups; experimental and control. The population was Grade X students of SMK Negeri 3 Palu. The sample was selected by applying purposive sampling technique. They were X RPL A consisting of 30 students (experimental group) and X TSM A consisting of 34 students (the control group). The experimental group was given the treatment, while the control group was not. The technique of data collection was test. They were pre-test and post-test. The result of data analysis indicated that there was a significant difference between the post-test results of two groups. By applying two tails test at 0.05 level of significance with 60 degrees of freedom (df) or 62-2=60, it was found that the t-counted (8.462) was greater than the t-table (1.669). It means that the research hypothesis is accepted. In conclusion, the application of story mapping technique can improve writing skills of Grade X students of SMK particularly in writing English Narrative Text. The result of this research will be very beneficial for future studies, especially for the English teacher of junior and senior high school or lecturer of English Education Study Program. They can apply this technique in their daily instructional process, as well as they can conduct a class action or experimental research by applying the story mapping technique. In addition, this technique can not only for teaching writing but it also can be applied for teaching reading. By doing so, the future study can be also focused on Improving reading skills through story mapping technique.
This research aims to find out and analyze learning experiences in using online learning media during the COVID 19 pandemic of the second-year undergraduate students of English Education study program at Tadulako University Palu. The researcher applied qualitative case study research methodology. It investigates intensively about an individual, group, or other units to find a general understanding of the subjects. The subject was selected using snowball sampling techniques in which the four students were chosen intentionally for research participants from 236 students. The researcher initially contacted her quittance then introduces her to the first interviewee, for good measure the interviewee introduce her to the next ones. Data were collected through in-depth interviews and documentary data. In this research, the researcher found that the students from case two in Menui Island who are in their hometown during the online learning period faced a number of difficulties in their learning experiences. Their learning experiences include learning motivation and learning obstacles. The results have shown that the first is unavailability and unsustainability of internet connection, the second is the accessibility of the teaching media, and the last is the compatibility of facilities to access the media. The result of the current study suggests that accessibility of the internet connection is still the major factor influencing the success of online learning and concludes that the students have less motivation to study and face a lot of obstacles in the search for internet availability. Also implies that online learning media is considered an unsuccessful method of learning during COVID-19 era for students in the remote area particularly in Menui island. As a preventive action, the government should install more Telkom towers in remote areas like Menui in order for the students to achieve the national learning objective.
