This study investigates the relationship between motivation and teaching performance on one hand, and motivation and research performance on the other hand. It employs a survey research method in collecting data from academic staff of Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida University, Lapai (IBBUL), Nigeria. A total of 141 or 64% of the academic staff of the University were sampled out of a population of 219 academic staff. Pearson correlation and linear regression statistical tools were used to determine the relationship as well as the effect of motivation on both teaching and research performances. The result reveals a moderate positive correlation between motivation and teaching performance; and a weak negative correlation between motivation and research performance. It further shows that motivation exerts significant influence on teaching performance but does not exert any significant influence on research performance. The study therefore recommends that universities should take the issue of academic staff motivation seriously to facilitate effective teaching and delivery of knowledge. Universities should also set aside special funds for sponsoring publication and even marketing of researches conducted by the academic staff.
This study seeks to ascertain academic staff level of motivation, dissatisfaction and performance at work. The study employed a survey research method to collect research data from academic staff of Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida University, Lapai, Nigeria. A total of 141 or 64% of the academic staff of the University were sampled out of a population of 219 academic staff. Descriptive statistical tools were used to measure the research variables. The study reveals that academic staffs are very highly motivated at work and also highly contented with the working environment. The study further revealed that staff performance as it relates to teaching is very high while their performance in the areas of research and other publications is moderate. It is therefore recommended that universities and other tertiary institutions should take the issue if academic staff motivation seriously to facilitate effective teaching and delivery of knowledge.
To address the growing labour unemployment rate in Nigeria, several hard and soft intervention policies have been put in place by the Nigerian government and supporting partners. Based on the assumption that unemployment, government interventions, and personal ambition can motivate individuals into entrepreneurship, this study examined the effect of entrepreneurial motivational factors on the operational performance of Small Scale Industries (SSIs) located in Yanya, Abuja. Relying on a cross-sectional survey research design, 337 practicing entrepreneurs, random sampling technique and multiple regression analysis, the study found that facilitating and compelling motivational factors are the significant predictors of SSIs’ performance, while ambitious motivational factor is negatively but significantly impactful on SSIs’ performance. It, therefore, suffices to recommend that the Nigerian government and organized private sector should collaborate to increase the stock of hard and soft infrastructure, especially in the industrial estates and business clusters, to enhance entrepreneurship participation and inclusiveness
