Imported English language textbooks were introduced in Malaysian schools as part of the Common European Framework Reference of Language (CEFR)'s roll-out in this country through the establishment of the Standards Based English Language Curriculum (SBELC), which is the official English language curriculum in Malaysia. However, concerns were raised with regards to the use of these textbooks. Despite advocates clamoring for the textbooks' alignment to the CEFR and their contents, critiques were quick to point out their imbalanced cultural content, high lexical density, lack of supplementary materials, steep price point, ambiguous selection procedure, and fitness with the goals and objective of Malaysia's language program and English curriculum. Doubts were also expressed about Malaysian English teachers' preparedness to teach by using these books. It is then suggested that English language textbooks' selection procedure in Malaysia to be refined through the establishment of a systematic and transparent textbook evaluation framework. This will help in streamlining future English language textbooks selection and development processes in Malaysia while preventing any unnecessary outcry in future.
21 st century learning focuses on the flow of information, media, and technology. In Malaysia, many university students face problems in English writing. Thus, students should be exposed to the technology training in innovative ways to produce students with a dynamic in this ever-changing world. Recently, the transformation and the evolution of mobile have created a huge impact on mobile users, as it is the current trend. Due to this matter, university students are now experiencing innovative learning development through mobile application and this can certainly improve their learning performance. The purpose of the study is to examine the application of mobile learning technologies through mind mapping applications for augmenting writing performance at Malaysian universities. The study was based on three different research theories -Flower and Hayes Writing Process Model, Radiant Thinking Theory, and Unified Theory of Acceptance and Use of Technology (UTAUT). The results of the study show that the students had positive responses towards English writing skills background, mobile technologies application background and mind mapping applications background. The proposed conceptual framework, Mobile-assisted Mind Mapping Technique Model (MMMTM) supports the need for Malaysian university students to augment their writing performance. It is hoped that this study will benefit the policymakers, tertiary educators and university students in teaching and learning specifically in writing courses.
Shariah-Compliant Patriotism (S-CP) is one of the areas of success from Islamic education in forming a good human being within the framework of Islamic teachings. The demands of patriotism in Islam include helping to achieve progress and peace in a country, preserving the good name of the country in the eyes of the world, as well as defending the religion from any threat. The writing of this paper is aimed at identifying the principles of shariah-compliant patriotism and proposing a framework for shariah-compliant patriotism in Malaysia. The findings of this study have shown that there are seven (7) principles of shariah-compliant patriotism: (i) Belief, (ii) Morals, (iii) Knowledge, (iv) Consensus, (v) Islamic Education, (vi) Respect, and (vii) Strategy, while the development of the shariah-compliant patriotism framework is based on belief, shariah and akhlaq, and sourced from the holy Quran, al-Sunnah, Malay literature, and the National Principle. Finally, the produced S-CP framework is expected to be the basis/core in the construction of profiles, models, and modules for unityrelated stakeholders in Malaysia such as the Department of National Unity and Integration (JPNIN) -to strengthen the racial unity in this country, in line with the National Unity Policy (DPN) to ensure the security and continued development of the country while also defending its sovereignty based on the Federal Constitution and the National Policy.
The recent Covid-19 outbreak has led educators to explore different online pedagogical tools during English lessons. It has gradually impacted the way writing skill is taught. With the integration of various digital tools like Google Docs, educators and learners are learning to adapt to the new learning mode. Although the lesson is not conducted face-to-face (F2F), collaborative learning can still be continued and carried out online. As the online learning method is adopted in a writing class, it is important to highlight students' perceptions regarding their learning motivation and how working collaboratively affects their learning. Therefore, this study aims 1) to explore students' perceptions of Google Docs as a tool in learning writing and 2) to discover students' perceptions of Google Docs as an online collaborative tool in learning writing. A quantitative study was carried out on 98 ESL tertiary students and the result was tabulated and analysed using Statistical Package for the Social Science (SPSS). The results revealed that Google Docs positively affected students' learning experience and assisted the learning process through the teacher's written corrective feedback. The majority of the students reacted positively to the usage of Google Docs in learning writing and the written corrective feedback helped the students to comprehend the writing task. Most importantly, Google Docs was considered an effective collaborative learning tool in English writing skills class. For future studies, to obtain more accurate data, a larger scale of respondents of low and high proficiency can be used and hybrid research (quantitative and qualitative measures) can be adopted to address the research questions more effectively.
The non-compliance with environmental care ethics has attracted the problems of pollution, natural disasters, malpractice, and crime. The existing Green and Safe Cities (GSC) model is built with the concept of object-based material and secular space that excludes religious elements. Thus, this study aims (i) To identify the issues, problems, and principles of GSC from maqasid shariah perspective, and (ii) To suggest a shariah compliant nexus model for GSC. The findings discovered that there is a need to develop a new shariah-compliant GSC model based on a more integrated Religious Framework of the Islamic Built Environment. It is hoped that this new model can solve Malaysia's city issues and problems that in turn produce a healthy and safe community that is parallel with the Shared Prosperity Vision (SPV) 2030.
