Postsecondary educators preparing future clinicians and teachers have an important responsibility to develop cultural competence of their students in order to meet the increasing and ever-changing demands of today's global workforce and diverse workplace. In this article, the authors discuss key components to developing cultural intelligence. These include an awareness of multiperspective identity, an understanding of the concepts of privilege and difference, the development of one's diversity consciousness, and an understanding of and respect for the guiding principles of cultural competence that lead to an understanding of others. Application to practice is presented through multiperspective identity and role-play activities and a case study with questions for facilitating discussion.
Sensory integration therapy has become widely accepted as an intervention for enhancing language-learning disorders and academic difficulties in hildren. However, much controversy surrounds this approach because of the small amount of empirical evidence to support its application to this clinical population. The purpose of this article is threefold: review the relevant research pertaining to treatment efficacy studies involving sensory integration conducted over the last three decades, discuss the perspectives from which various researchers and clinicians view language disorders in children, and discuss parameters for evaluating efficacy studies and the clinical use of sensory integration, suggesting directions for future research.
By using the proposed guide, speech-language pathologists can increase their application of research to clinical practice, thereby enhancing their skills in informed clinical decision making.
This article focuses on applying systematic reviews to the Early Intervention (EI) literature. Systematic reviews are defined and differentiated from traditional, or narrative, reviews and from meta-analyses. In addition, the steps involved in critiquing systematic reviews and an illustration of a systematic review from the EI literature are detailed.
