A large study of general practitioners in Manchester showed that women doctors were younger than men doctors, and few were single handed or worked in deprived inner city areas. They had closely similar patterns of care to their male colleagues, and although they worked slightly fewer hours in surgery, they had almost identical consultation times per patient. Women general practitioners were less active in politics and education than men.
The afternoon session included a talk by Dr Rae ondoses receivedfrom medicalradiation (diagnostic radiation, radiotherapy and nuclear medicine). He pointed out that the frequency rate of the use of diagnostic radiology in Great Britain was lower than that in other European countries and although it had increased between 1957 and 1977 by 2-3% per year, the measured gonadal dose was the same and had not increased with increased usage. This is presumably because less obstetric radiology is now performed and the greatest increasein usage isamong the elderly.Thefinal session included a symposium on 'Radon in mines and dwellings'. This provoked a lively discussion about risks to householders exposed to high background rates and possible action that could be taken to overcome this. The meeting ended with a visit around the establishment.
