Despite complementary feeding practices among mothers with children aged 6 – 24 months, death and disease infection rates are still escalating regardless of the nutritional status of children within that age gap. Complementary feeding practices plays a key role in providing the much-needed nutrients as it enhances successive development and general wellbeing of children, 6-24 months. A few research studies have been conducted in Kisumu County, more specifically, Kisumu County Referral Hospital on complementary feeding practices and nutritional status among children aged 6-24 months which is part of the critical window in the life of a child. The study assumed that most mothers with children between the age of 6-24 months within the Sub County attended Kisumu County Referral Hospital which was the area of study. The current study sought to establish the influence of complementary feeding practices and the nutritional status of children 6-24 months A sample selection of 79 participants was done through purposive sampling. Data was harvested through questionnaires. The study instruments were piloted and adjusted using participants who were not part of the sample. Analysis of data was done using descriptive statistics; mean and percentages. The study reveals that there are poor complementary feeding practices among mothers due to harmful cultural beliefs and low social-economic status. The study also report that malnourished children were 55% male and 45% female respectively. The study recommends that health aid programs should be more focused on homes with low economic background, counseling and sensitization to improve the mother’s knowledge on complementary feeding practices and nutritional status.
There are many factors in student leadership which predispose student leaders to high levels of stress. This include; students discipline, communication, enforcing school rules, decision making and balancing leadership and academic roles. The increase in student leaders stress is alarming thus the need to focus on stress management techniques that they employ. This study assessed the effect of emotion focused coping techniques of stress management and secondary school student leadership in, Kenya. The study hypotheses stated that` there was no significant effect of emotion focused coping techniques and secondary school student leadership. Emotion focused coping technique is a personal effort to deal with negative feelings caused by a stressful event and may include venting, rumination, emotional support and religion. Student leadership refers to the roles that student leaders participate in within the school setting which involve, communication, Students discipline, coordination decision making, Planning, and monitoring of student's activities. The Cognitive Appraisal theory was applied in the study. The research designs used were descriptive and correlational in nature. The target population was 4143 respondents out of which were 3825 student leaders, 159 head teachers and 159 deputy head teachers within 159 secondary schools in Kenya. Stratified random sampling technique and saturated sampling technique were used to select 1275 student leaders, 53 deputy head teachers and 53 head teachers as respondents for the study. Data was harvested using questionnaires and interview schedules. Pearson r correlation, percentages and frequency counts was used in data analysis. Study results indicate that there was weak positive correlation between emotion focused coping techniques and student leadership [r = .197, n=1126, p<.05. The study also revealed the existence of a weak effect of emotion focused coping technique on student leadership. In the current study, it was recommended that student leaders require training in stress management techniques, emotional awareness and leadership training.
Losing a life partner can be an overwhelming and traumatic life event which forces the remaining spouse to cope not only with the painful loss but also with their new widowhood status. This study seeks to establish the coping strategies used by widows in Kisumu East Sub County, Kisumu County, Kenya. A mixed method research design was used in the study. The target population consisted of widows in Kisumu East Sub County, Kisumu County, Kenya. The sampling technique used was purposive in nature. This technique was used to get a sample of 50 widows in Kisumu East Sub County. The instruments used for data collection were questionnaires and focus group discussion. Thematic analysis and descriptive statistics were employed in data analysis, Reliability and validity check of the instruments was done to attest the degree to which items measured the indicators for which they were designed. The findings of the study show that widows in Kisumu East subcounty use both adaptive and maladaptive coping strategies to cope with widowhood stress. Adaptive coping strategies used by widows were: counseling, social support networks, engaging in business, church activities, keeping significant memoirs of the deceased while maladaptive coping strategies included denial, sex, withdrawal, and substance use. The study recommends that widows should use adaptive coping strategies to cope with widowhood. Additionally, widows should be given enough platforms, space and support in the society to share their experiences as this enhances their general wellbeing. The study also recommends that widows should be empowered on self-awareness and assertive skills to help in building their self-esteem.
Despite, the key role that stress management techniques plays in dealing with the inevitable effect of stress through problem solving, emotional support and denial, there has been a burden among male and female student leaders, triggered by task performance. Specifically, this study sought to assess the effect of stress management techniques across gender on task performance among secondary school student leaders in Kisumu County, Kenya. The study was guided by Cognitive Appraisal theory. To realize this objective, Descriptive and Correlation research designs were used. The target population was male and female student leaders in secondary schools in Kisumu County. Stratified random sampling technique was used to select 1275 student leaders, 53 deputy head teachers and 53 head teachers. Data was generated through questionnaires. Reliability of the instruments was tested using Cronbach alpha and it gave an overall internal consistency of 0.7, hence reliable. Analysis of data was done using percentages, t-test and regression. The findings of the study show that female student leaders are more effective in task performance than their male counterparts. Secondly, the results indicate that gender has a moderating effect on task performance among student leaders. The study recommends appropriate and timely intervention in choice of stress management techniques for male and female student leaders.
Despite the inevitability of death, the loss of a spouse comes with diverse psychological burden ranging from intense anguish, helplessness, deep pain, mourning and anxiety. Worldwide and even in Kenya, widowhood; the loss of a spouse through death is on the rise. The heightened stress that comes with death may be detrimental to psychological wellbeing of the remaining spouse. The objective of the current study is to assess the relationship between widowhood and psychological health of widows in Kisumu East Sub County, Kisumu County, Kenya. The sampling technique used was purposive in nature. This enabled the researcher to sample 50 widows in Kisumu East Sub County. The study used mixed method research design, which includes quantitative and qualitative approaches. Questionnaires and scheduled interviews were used to gather information from the respondents. The researcher conducted a one-on-one session with the widows to be able to get further information on their psychological health. The study findings show that widowhood is correlated to psychological health as it leads to poor psychological health of widows. The study recommends that widows should be sensitized on the need to strive for good psychological health either by seeking counseling or joining widows support programs in the community to help them cope with psychological health challenges that comes with the death of a spouse. It is also recommended that counselors and non-governmental organization should aid in establishing widow support networks in Kisumu East Sub County. Through local campaigns, widows should be encouraged to share their experiences and speak with one voice in regard to their psychological health.
