Food is essential for human survival, and ensuring its availability is critical. Waqf is present as one of supporting institutions that supports food security. This paper aims to see how waqf can contribute to the food security of a community. Waqf, in its sense is an Islamic philanthropic institution that focus on welfare of Muslim. As a Muslim, it is important to safeguard one’s life as stated in Maqasid As Shariah. This paper employs systematic literature review to see the contribution of waqf through syirkah (partnership) for community food security. Syirkah plays its role as a connector between waqf and food security, with farmers at its spearhead. Syirkah is chosen because it is compatible with farmer’s business and waqf may serve to their business sustainability in general, and farmer’s livelihood in particular. The ultimate goal of this concept is to achieve stability in the supply of staple food which leads to its price stability, hence staple food is available and accessible to all. Furthermore, the stability achieved will reduce the burden of government to provide staple food in times of crisis and to promote welfare and better social cohesion of a community.
Waqf in its role as Islamic charitable institution has considerable role to sustainable economy, since the initiation of waqf itself started from Muslim for the benefit for all people. Despite its
Waste has become a serious problem in preserving the sustainability of the environment where humans live. Islam teaches the importance of preserving the environment as one of the efforts to preserve life. Waste management is usually under the domain of the government as part of its obligations to provide and manage public goods for the benefit of society. However, as the Covid-19 pandemic struck in late 2019, most governments globally are now short of budget and forced to take on loans to keep the economy afloat. It is worried that waste management has become a second priority in the government budget, while Covid-19 pandemic itself has produced another kind of waste that requires special handling to dispose and put more burden on the already distressing waste management issues that happened even before Covid-19. Because of the importance of preserving life as one of the parts of Iman and Islam, this paper is proposing waqf institution in its role as public goods provider to manage waste alongside the government. In short, waqf is utilized to manage waste generated so it will not harm the environment, especially during and after Covid-19 pandemic struck, potentially increasing waste generation exponentially. Moreover, it is possible for waqf institutions, either privately or publicly managed, to ease the burden of government in managing waste generated by society, from both obligation and budget perspectives. Nevertheless, the ultimate goal for this concept is to preserve the environment and life as one of the obligations stipulated in Maqasid As-Shariah (Islamic Objectives) to achieve Falah (Islamic Goal).
As human is the centre of development process, it is important to consider preferences of human behavior whether they prefer to change themselves or not. This explanation is inspired by Qur’an surah Ar Ra’d verse 11 that can be interpreted as the set of preferences which might influence someone’s state of condition. However, human development index which is widely used indicator for development study do not consider preference as the main factor of development. Therefore aim of this study is to examine interpretation of that surah whether set of preferences that consist of trust, altruism, patience, risk taking, and negative reciprocity, can influence the state of human development. This research Uses Linear Probability Model (LPM) which is estimated by OLS with 76 countries as observation. The result shows that altruism, patience and risk taking can influence human development significantly, whereas trust and negative reciprocity are not significant. Trust is not significant because there might be a condition of distrust economic activities, rather than trust, that signaled by complete contractual arrangement, whereas non significant of negative reciprocity might because the costly punishment opportunity to punish someone as the form of negative reciprocity, therefore people that think rationally will not take the revenge to others.
