Over the past several years, rural areas in transition countries including Ethiopia have experienced a structural transformation in their agricultural sectors combined with profound demographic changes, primarily due to massive out migration of the rural active and educated labor forces toward urban areas and abroad. Despite the potential relevance of migration and resulting remittances in fostering or hindering of transformation in agriculture, in Ethiopia little is understood about the linkage between these activities. This study aimed to analyze the impact of rural out migration on agricultural production by using a cross-sectional data obtained from randomly chosen 270 rural farm households during 2016/17 production season. A two stage Cobb-Douglas production function was used. The estimated results of the first stage showed that out-migration of labor from rural areas had insignificant effect on the labor hours allocated for agricultural activities of both temporary and permanent migrant sending households. On the other hand, the remittance income from migrant had significant and increasing effect on farm capital stock of permanent migrant sending households. Yet, it had positive but insignificant effect on farm capital stock of temporary migrant sending households. The second stage analysis revealed that migrant sending households obtain higher income than non-migrant sending households especially the permanent one. This indicated that rural out migration had a positive impact on agricultural production of study area on the rural households. The study recommends that Ethiopian government should give emphasis to the potential contributions of outmigration in supporting or generating employment opportunities.
Injera will continue to be the staple food for Ethiopians and Eritreans and some parts in east Africa in years to come. In order to efficiently bake Injera using various types of stoves, research and development work for Injera baking have been conducted so far and is critical. The use of energy sources is dominantly biomass is used for Injera baking followed by electricity yet. Electricity is mainly used in urban dwellers of the country which is limited one. Alternative energy sources such as solar thermal and biogas can be used for baking Injera alternatively. There are different types of Injera baking stoves design in Ethiopia using biomass energy such as open fire three stone stove, Mirt stove (includes improved one with high chimney, stand types), Burayou Injera baking stove Sodo, Awuramba, Tehesh indicating developmental patterns of stove based on the aim to reduce specific fuel consumption as well as efficiency by reducing energy losses during baking. Thus, it is determined that the average specific fuel consumption of three stone open fire was 929 g/kg of Injera, Mirt stove is 535g/kg of Injera, Gonziye is 617 g/kg of Injera, Awuramba is 573 g/kg of Injera while Sodo is 900 g/kg of Injera. The other Injera baking stoves were developed for baking Injera using solar thermal energy and biogas sources are designed to attain the average required surface temperature of Injera baking pan or Mitad. It is found that the average surface temperature of the concentric type solar thermal Injera baking stove is 148 oC, parabolic type solar Injera baking stove is 200 oC, electric stove is 225 oC using 3.75 KW electricity, WASS electrical is 220 oC consuming 1.4 KW electricity and biogas 210 oC. Further investigation needed to continue the developmental patterns of Injera baking system by improving the efficiency of the stove by reducing energy losses there has needed that the baking pan or Mitad to be improved.
Sleep disturbances are common in women, especially during pregnancy. This can result in emotional and psychological consequences for pregnant women, and it could lead to some serious complications for both mothers and their babies. However, it is not well recognized and has not been studied in developing countries, including Ethiopia.ObjectiveTo assess the quality of sleep and associated factors among pregnant women on antenatal care follow-up at Nekemte Referral Hospital and Wollega University Hospital, Nekemte, Ethiopia 2019.MethodsAn institution-based cross-sectional study was conducted from May to June 2019 at Nekemte Referral Hospital and Wollega University Hospital. A systematic random sampling technique was used to get 408 samples. Sleep quality was assessed using structured questionnaires of the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index tool. Then, the collected data was coded and entered into Epi-Data 3.1 version and analyzed using SPSS version 20. A logistic regression analysis was computed to determine the association between independent variables and sleep quality. Statistically significant was considered at P-value < 0.05.ResultsWith 96.4% response rate, the magnitude of poor sleep quality was found to be 59.1% [95% CI: (54.2, 64)]. Poor sleep quality was high among participants with unplanned pregnancy [AOR = 4.25,95%CI:(1.47,12.23)],poor sleep hygiene[AOR = 2.93,95%CI:(1.41,6.09)],depressed women[AOR = 5.73,95%CI:(2.49,13.21)], anxiety disorder[AOR = 6.62,95%CI:(2.61,16.82)] and third trimester participants [AOR = 5.84,95% CI:(2.49,13.21)].ConclusionThis study demonstrated that poor sleep quality among pregnant women is high. Factors like depression, anxiety, poor sleep hygiene, first time pregnancy, unplanned pregnancy, and late gestational age were found to be associated with poor sleep quality. This underlines health care planners’ needs to incorporate screening for poor sleep quality into routine ANC services.
Background: Premenstrual dysphoric disorder (PMDD)-is a severe and disabling form of premenstrual Syndrome affecting 3-8% of menstruating women. The disorder consists of a cluster of affective, behavioral and somatic symptoms that recur monthly during the luteal phase the menstrual cycle. Premenstrual dysphoric disorder (PMDD) was added to the list of depressive disorders in the diagnostic and statistical manual of mental disorders in 2013. The exact pathogenesis of the disorder is still unclear.Objective: To assess the prevalence of PMDD and its associated factors among students of Hawassa tabor secondary and preparatory school.Method: A cross sectional institutional based was conducted among 351 randomly selected female students of Hawassa tabor school. Data was collected by three students were facilitate the works with closed ended structured questionnaire and they was trained on how to collect the data. The collected data was entered, analyzed and cleaned by SPS.Results: prevalence of premenstrual dysphoric disorder in this study was 76.9%. Of each symptom is more than ninety present or 324 (92.3%) respondents can’t have experience unpleasant physical or emotional symptoms peculiar to the five days before the onset of menses & 27(7.7%) participants have show the symptoms. Among those 26 (7.4%) have present for the past ≥3 consecutive cycles. 46 (13.1%) have family history of such symptoms.Conclusions: These findings have implications for both women and medical providers, who should be aware that PMS symptoms are prevalent and often distressing, yet also understand that the severity of symptoms may remit over time.
