There is no doubt about the fact that information and communication technology utilisation (ICT) is a life wire of any school organisation. However, planners and administrators are aware of the contributions that ICT utilisation could make to the enhancement of academic activities of the institutions. The attainment of the goals and objectives of higher institutions of learning required the availability and optimal utilisation of ICT. Based on the foregoing premise, this study examined ICT utilisation as a veritable tool for academic staff effectiveness in Nigerian Polytechnics. The concept and importance of ICT utilisation were critically examined. Challenges associated with ICT utilisation were highlighted, which include unsteady power supply, inadequate funding, poor quality of telecommunication connections, and lack of qualified ICT operators. The study concluded that the contribution of ICT utilisation to the development of entire level of education today make it necessary for the adoption of ICT utilisation by the school authorities, administrators as well as the lecturers in such a way that it easier for the utilisation of application packages (like power point presentation, Microsoft word process, spread sheet and so on), internet application (video conferencing, e-mail, data base, e-learning) and computer hardware facilities (photo copier machine, printing machine, scanners, laptops to mention but a few). This helps to improve the quality of teaching-learning process, academic and administrative effectiveness in institutions. Also, the technological devices of an institution are a major determinant factor in the actualisation of its objectives. The study recommends that proper funding should be provided for the procurement of ICT devices and equipment which are capital intensive.
Public secondary schools in Nigeria occupy a significant position for providing qualitative education, yet there has been increasing public discontent with the quality of students being produced in the country’s public secondary schools. Teachers are regarded as one of the resources necessary for achieving the goals of secondary education. It is against this backdrop that this study examined teachers’ collective efficacy as a predictor of students’ academic performance in North Central Nigeria. Three research questions and hypotheses were generated to guide the study, which made use of a correlation-type descriptive research design with a population consisting of all teachers in the North Central region. An instrument titled the Teachers’ Collective Efficacy Questionnaire (TCEQ) was developed to elicit pertinent data from the participants. Also, students’ academic achievement was measured. The results of the study revealed that no substantial nexus existed between the teachers’ experience and the students’ academic achievement. However, the teachers’ verbal encouragement was found to be an important predictor of the learners’ academic success. Similarly, the teachers’ academic emphasis was a significant predictor of the learners’ academic performance. Based on this, it was established that teachers’ collective efficacy is an important predictor that can be used to improve students’ academic achievement. The study recommended that education administrators should acquaint their staff with the importance of collective efficacy towards improving students’ academic performance. It was also recommended that the government should organize workshops, seminars, and conferences for the supervisors, principals, and teachers of schools on efficacy issues and that teachers should be well motivated to maintain a high degree of efficacy in their various schools.
Enrolment and graduation rates are regarded as important indices that can be used to measure the growth and development of higher institutions, be it private or public. It is on this premise that this study assessed the students’ enrolment and graduation rates in Al-Hikmah University and its implication for the management. Two research questions were raised to guide the study. In order to provide answers to the research questions, secondary data were collected that consists of number of students’ enrolment from 2006–2019. Also, number of students that graduated were obtained from 2009–2019. Data collected were analysed using descriptive method. Findings of the study revealed high students’ enrolment from 2006 to 2020. Specifically, the highest enrolment in the university was in 2019 where it had 2793 at undergraduate level while 288 students were admitted in the year 2020 at postgraduate level. On graduation rate, findings showed that in the 2015/2016, 874 students graduated from the university, been the highest number of graduands ever recorded at undergraduate level while 64 postgraduate students were graduated in the year 2017/2018 session, been the highest number since the inception of the university. Based on the foregoing, the study concludes that enrolment and graduation rates are key determinants of school success. The study recommends that there is need for recruitment of agents to assist the university in sourcing for students that are yearning for admission. The agents to be recruited must be remunerated based on number of students they bring to the university; this will increase their recruitment drive. Lastly, there is need for downward review of the school fees so as to increase the enrolment of students.
Workplace behaviour refers to behaviour that organization requires or demands of employees at all times which will encourage efficient running of the organization and subsequently lead to the attainment of the goals. Drawing from empirical studies and review of theories, this study examined the relationship between workplace behaviour and staff job performance in private secondary schools in Ilorin West local government, Kwara state, Nigeria. Specifically, the study assessed: (i) the relationship between punctuality and staff job performance in private secondary schools in Ilorin West local government, Kwara state, Nigeria; (ii) the relationship between teamwork and staff job performance in private secondary schools in Ilorin West local government, Kwara state, Nigeria and (iii) the relationship between discipline and staff job performance in private secondary schools in Ilorin West local government, Kwara state, Nigeria. The study was a descriptive research of correlation type, random sampling technique was used to select 50 private secondary schools in Ilorin West local government. Random sampling technique was used to select 10 staff per school. Purposive sampling technique was used to select administrative officers (Proprietors, Principals, Vice-Principals and Bursars). Questionnaire was used to collect data for the study, the instruments were validated by the experts and also tested for reliability. The reliability coefficients realized for WPQ and SJPQ were 0.82 and 0.76, respectively. The main and operational hypotheses were tested using Pearson product-moment correlation statistics respectively at 0.05 level of significance. The results revealed that there was a significant relationship between workplace behaviour and staff job performance (p˃0.05). The study concluded that workplace behaviour plays a significant role in enhancing staff job performance which would consequently facilitate the realization of educational goals of secondary schools in Ilorin-West local government, Kwara state, Nigeria. Based on the findings and conclusion, the study recommended that education stakeholders, including state government, should intensify their efforts to ensure that staff maintain workplace behaviour through strict implementation of staff code of conduct, the staff should be sensitized on the importance and consequences of workplace behaviour and ensure that appropriate sanctions are carried out on the defaulters. Keywords: workplace behaviour, job performance, private secondary schools
Social media has gained broader acceptability and usability and is fast becoming perhaps the most important communication tool in 21 st Century. The acceptability of the social media has gained tremendous popularity among students especially at higher institution. Drawing from the foregoing point, the main purpose of the study thus is to examine the validity and reliability of both survey and interview on social media adoption and entrepreneurial skills development among tertiary institution students in Nigeria focusing on the pilot study report. For the purpose of the pilot study, 100 students were selected from Al-Hikmah University and Kwara State University in Kwara State because of their serious commitment to entrepreneurial skills development for the quantitative aspect, while two artisans each from the universities were used for data collection in qualitative approach. Two instruments were used to collect data. First, an instrument titled "Social Media and Entrepreneurship Questionnaire (SMEQ)" was designed to get comprehensive information from the students. Second, an interview protocol tagged "Interview Protocol on Social Media Adoption and Entrepreneurship (IPMSAE)" was designed to elicit relevant information from the artisans. Both Statistical Package and Social Sciences (SPSS) and PLS-SEM Software were used to assess the psychometric properties of the adapted instruments. Also, thematic type of analysis was used to assess the credibility or otherwise of the interview protocol. Specifically, findings from quantitative approach reveal that Cronbach's Alpha of the instrument loaded between 0.821 and 0.942 (Social Media Adoption: 0.885; Social Media and Addictive Behavior: 0.821; Entrepreneurial Skills: 0.942 and Self-Reliance: 0.914). Also, the use of PLS-SEM shows that composite reliability, cross loadings, average variance extracted (AVE) and discriminant validity loaded within the minimum benchmarks, indicating adequate validity and reliability of the instrument. Furthermore, findings from qualitative after transcription of the interviews indicate the trustworthiness and credibility of the protocol. Based on the findings of the study from the two approaches, it can be advanced that the findings of the study helped to establish adequate validity and reliability of the instruments used via quantitative and qualitative methods.
