OBJECTIVE: This study investigated the body composition and prevalence of hypertension in maroon women from the State of Alagoas and compared these variables with those of non-maroon women from the same state. METHODS: The data were collected from two cross-sectional surveys done in 2005 and 2008. The first study included a representative sample of mothers of children aged 0 to 5 years from the State of Alagoas, and the second study included all women aged 18 to 60 years living in maroon communities (n=39) in the same state. Data were collected during home interviews. The prevalence ratio and respective 95% confidence interval given by the Poisson regression with robust adjustment of variance was used as the measure of association. RESULTS: The study assessed 1,631 maroon women and 1,098 non-maroon mothers. Maroon women had lower education level, more children, higher prevalence of hypertension and stunting, and higher age at menarche, body mass index, waist circumference, waist-to-height ratio, and waist-to-hip ratio. After adjustment for age, the following prevalences remained higher in maroon women: hypertension (PR=1.81; 95%CI: 1.49; 2.21), WC >80cm (PR=1.23 95%CI: 1.11; 1.37), WHtR >0.5 (PR=1.11; 95%CI: 1.02; 1.21), and WHR >0.85 (PR=1.64; 95%CI: 1.43; 1.88). CONCLUSION: Maroon women belong to lower socioeconomic classes than non-maroon women and are at greater risk of abdominal obesity and hypertension, characteristics that make them especially vulnerable to the morbidity and mortality caused by cardiovascular diseases, justifying the preferential implementation of measures of care.
BackgroundThe emergence of diseases such as dyslipidemia, systemic arterial hypertension, insulin resistance and metabolic syndrome in children and adolescents has brought about a change in the epidemiologic profile of the pediatric population. As action to promote health in the school environment is a useful tool for changing the pattern of health/disease in the young population, the present study aimed to identify schools that promote healthy eating and physical activity and to study the relationship between these practices and the prevalence of overweight, hypertension, insulin resistance and hypercholesterolemia in adolescents.MethodsA cross-sectional population-based study was conducted with 2400 adolescents aged from 12 to 17 years old and participating in the “Study of Cardiovascular Risk in Adolescents” (ERICA – Estudo de Riscos Cardiovasculares em Adolescente). The association between dependent (overweight, insulin resistance, hypertension and dyslipidemia) and independent variables (implementation of health promoting initiative in schools) was investigated using the chi-square test and prevalence ratio (PR) with a confidence index (CI) of 95%.ResultsThe unsatisfactory implementation of a “health promoting environment” (PR = 1.02; CI 95%: 1.0; 1.04) and “partnerships with the health sector” (PR = 1.03; CI 95%: 1.01; 1.05) were linked to a high prevalence of overweight in adolescents. Hypercholesterolemia was found to be higher in the schools with unsatisfactory implementation of “healthy eating and health on the scholar curriculum” (PR = 1.71; CI 95%: 1.22; 2.44) and those lacking a “healthy-eating promoting environment” (PR = 1.29; CI 95%: 1.10; 1.54). Schools with unsatisfactory implementation of a “health-eating promoting environment” (PR = 1.36; CI 95%: 1.04; 1.79) and those lacking “partnership with the health sector” (PR = 2.12; CI 95%: 1.38; 3.24) had more adolescents with insulin resistance. There was no association between hypertension and any other component studied.ConclusionSchools which have implemented adequate health promotion in their curriculums showed a lower prevalence of overweight, insulin resistance and hypercholesterolemia in adolescents.
BackgroundAnemia is a major public health problem in preschool children in Alagoas, Brazil, especially in the younger population, because of a positive correlation between hemoglobin level and age. However, due to the lack of studies, it is not known how widespread this condition is among older children or how it is associated with socioeconomic status. The aim of this study was to investigate the prevalence of and factors associated with anemia in school children from the city of Maceió, Alagoas state, Brazil. The analysis was stratified to identify any effect modification according to whether they attend public or private schools.MethodsA cross-sectional study was conducted using probability sampling of 1518 children (9.8 ± 0.5 years of age) attending public (n = 931) and private (n = 587) elementary schools in the municipality. Semi-structured questionnaires were used to obtain socioeconomic, demographic, anthropomorphic, hemoglobin (Hb), and dietary data. Anemia (Hb <11.5 g/dL) was the dependent variable. The measure of association used was prevalence ratio (PR) and respective CI95 %, calculated by Poisson regression with robust variance adjustment, for the crude and adjusted analyses.ResultsThe prevalence of anemia was found to be higher amongst the public school children than the private school children (10.8 % vs. 7.0 %; PR = 1.54; CI95 %: 1.1; 2.2). At the public schools, the variables that remained significantly associated with anemia after the multivariate analysis were “consumption of fruits/fruit juices < 2 portions/day” (PR = 2.19; CI95 %: 1.18; 4.06) and “male” (PR = 1.51; CI95 %: 1.001; 2.30). At the private schools, these variables were “working mother” (PR = 2.83; CI95 %: 1.23; 6.52) and “monthly school fees < R$ 188.00” (PR = 3.20; CI95 %: 1.46; 7.03).ConclusionsIn the population under study, anemia constitutes a major health problem, especially among children from public schools. Considering the associated factors and the fact that these children are in a school environment, the promotion of healthy eating habits could constitute an important approach for reducing the prevalence of anemia.
OBJECTIVE: To assess the dietary intake and the nutritional status of children from Alagoas maroon communities. METHODS: Cross-sectional study involving 724 children (12-60 months) from 39 Alagoas maroon communities. The nutritional status was investigated by anthropometric, biochemical (hemoglobin) and food consumption indicators. RESULTS: The prevalence of anemia, stunting and obesity were, respectively, 48.0, 9.7 and 6.0%. The children had a monotonous eating pattern and a considerable prevalence of inadequate intake of zinc (17.0%), folate (18.1%), iron (20.2%) and vitamins A (29.7%) and C (34.3%). Compared to the other socioeconomic classes, the E class children had lower average consumption (p<0.05) for energy, carbohydrate, vitamins A and C, folate, iron, zinc and phosphorus. CONCLUSIONS: Anemia is a serious Public Health problem. The prevalence of chronic malnutrition and obesity were similar to those observed for the children in the State as a whole, where a nutritional transition process is occuring. There was a high prevalence of inadequate food intake risk for zinc, folate, iron and vitamins A and C, suggesting the need for nutritional education actions.
Resumo Este estudo analisa os comportamentos relacionados ao estilo de vida de adolescentes em Recife, Brasil. Estudo transversal com dados do Estudo de Riscos Cardiovasculares em Adolescentes (ERICA). 2.400 estudantes de 12 a 17 anos foram entrevistados. Foram analisadas as prevalências de atividade física, comportamento alimentar, tabagismo e consumo de álcool. O teste Qui-quadrado e Intervalo de confiança 95% (IC95%) foram usados para avaliar a significância estatística das medidas. Observou-se 60% dos adolescentes com comportamentos alimentares inadequados quanto ao consumo de café da manhã, água/dia e refeições em frente à TV. Cerca de 40% (IC95%: 39,7-45) não realizavam refeições com os pais ou responsáveis. A prevalência de inatividade física foi de 52,4% (IC95%: 50-55). Adolescentes do sexo feminino foram mais inativas (68,7%; IC95%: 65-72) em relação aos meninos (36,4%; IC95%: 33-40). Adolescentes das classes econômicas D e E foram os mais inativos (60,7%; IC95%: 46-73). O consumo de bebida alcoólica foi de 18,7% (IC95%: 2,6-5,6) e o tabagismo foi de 3,8% (IC95%: 2-6) dos indivíduos. Comportamentos alimentares inadequados e a inatividade física foram os principais domínios responsáveis por um estilo de vida não saudável, seguidos pelo consumo de álcool e tabagismo.
