The aim of the present study was to investigate the effects of fermented barley supplementation on blood lipid profiles, carnitine concentrations, and hepatic mRNA levels of enzymes involved in fatty acid metabolism.
ZymoGrain™ was evaluated for its protective effects against the adverse effects of a high fat diet (60% fat kcal). High fat diet‐induced obese C57BL/6J mice were divided into 6 groups; normal diet group (ND), high fat diet control group (HD), HD plus 3% barley group, HD plus 1.5% ZG group, HD plus 3% ZG group and HD plus 5% ZG group and fed for 12 weeks.Finally, body weight, epididymal fat pad weight, total cholesterol (TC) and triglyceride (TG) concentrations were significantly higher in the HD than ND, but were lower when the high fat diet was combined with ZG. ZG supplements altered levels of ACC, CPT‐1, PPAR‐α and PPAR‐γ mRNA levels in the liver.These results suggest that ZG supplementation may help prevent diet‐induced obesity and related metabolic abnormalities.(This study was supported by grant No. 70004567 from Ministry of Knowledge Economy)
