Though seldom seen in the optical path of a fiber-optic communications system, polymers have always played an important role in protecting, aligning and joining optical fibers and components. In this paper we describe these uses of polymers and explore possible future applications where polymers will play more central functions. We foresee the use of polymers as encapsulants and adhesives, high-performance and low cost packaging materials, and waveguides for data communications systems.
scite is a Brooklyn-based organization that helps researchers better discover and understand research articles through Smart Citations–citations that display the context of the citation and describe whether the article provides supporting or contrasting evidence. scite is used by students and researchers from around the world and is funded in part by the National Science Foundation and the National Institute on Drug Abuse of the National Institutes of Health.
