Medical observations show that the level of pollinosis increased by 34.6% in central Russia in 2005-2012. This paper presents the results of 6-year pollen monitoring carried out with a Hirst-type pollen trap (Burkard Manufacturing Co. Ltd) between 2010 and 2015 in Perm Krai (Russia). Usually, sensitization of allergic people occurs in three periods: (i) spring due to the pollen of Betula, (ii) early summer due to Poaceae pollen, and (iii) late summer as a result of Artemisia pollen. Betula pollen, which is dominant (26.9-65.2% of total pollen counts), is recorded in large numbers in the period of flowering and occasionally during the entire period of pollination. Among herbaceous plants, the pollen of Poaceae, Urticaceae and Artemisia dominates in airborne pollen. The concentration of allergenic pollen grains in the air of Perm Krai is lower than in other European geographical regions.
Dramatic progress of computer technologies triggered the development of global information space covering almost all areas of human activity. Medical sciences including allergy were no exception. Pollen allergy is a common condition characterized by regional and geographic specifics. Current modalities provide distance relationship between the doctor and patient with pollen allergy, optimize treatment and prevention of exacerbations, and improve the quality of life. There are three types of online resources for patients with pollen allergy, i.e., (1) pollen monitoring and pollen count measurements, (2) pollen allergy clinical sign maps, and (3) resources predicting the risk of exacerbations which contain additional important information. This paper addresses current Russian and European internet resources for patients with pollen allergy. European information programs are a part of public health system being a single network that functions stably for many decades. Domestic online resources have recently appeared and their functioning is unstable. However, these online resources are characterized by promising future development. The review is dedicated to the analysis of ecological aspects of pollen allergy (pollinosis). The characteristic of pollen as a natural aerosol component is given. The information related to aeropalinological monitoring and its importance in public health service is presented. The peculiarity of this pathology is its regional variety associated with differences in plant species compositions and pollen periods. The problem of immune response formation to pollen has been studied most profoundly. At that it is known that sensibilization is not always associated with clinical signs. Russian and foreign data about correlation studies between the pollen quantity and the disorder symptom load are discussed. It is shown that there is no decisive answer to the question about threshold pollen counts of certain plants and its impact on different stages of respiratory diseases. The detailed analysis of the correlation between the symptoms and quantitative variables of pollen allergens may provide useful information for risks evaluation of disease exacerbation as well as for tactics elaboration of hypoallergic measures. This is a cross-disciplinary issue involving allergology, aerobiology and ecology. The perspective of further development of this subject in order to obtain more accurate vision of the reasons, mechanisms and patterns of all parts of multifactorial process of pollinosis formation is discussed.
