could infer meaningful results by reflecting the actual nasal dimensions in unilateral cleft lip patients. The 3D imaging analysis has become possible owing to recent advances in technology. Three-dimensional imaging systems have advantages of accuracy of image measurement, as well as limited distortion in image capture. Moreover, 3D surface data can be archived for the subsequent analysis, and the data is less influenced by subject's head position at the time of acquiring images. 2D photographs require several views of the face to analyze the shape, but a single 3D image can analyze almost the whole facial surface by rotating the image. It leads to higher accuracy and less distortion in measuring inter-landmark distances and calculating its ratios. Although setting up a 3D system is expensive and requires considerable knowledge about computer software, it is now widespread in many institutions. The use of 3D imaging systems may present new opportunities for plastic surgeons to plan and assess patients accurately.
scite is a Brooklyn-based organization that helps researchers better discover and understand research articles through Smart Citations–citations that display the context of the citation and describe whether the article provides supporting or contrasting evidence. scite is used by students and researchers from around the world and is funded in part by the National Science Foundation and the National Institute on Drug Abuse of the National Institutes of Health.
