Ultrasonic vocalizations (USVs) emitted by rodent pups, mouse, rat, Syrian hamster, vole, and Mongolian gerbil, were compared as a basic study for a screening test of anti-panic drugs. USVs of rodent pups, separated from their mother under a low temperature condition, were collected by Real-Time Spectrogram (RTS) apparatus, and transformed into spectrograms and power spectra by SIGNAL software. Waveforms of USVs emitted by the rodent pups showed several characteristic features, and species specificity of USVs was shown. We think that the species specificity might be due to differences of the anatomical structures in the respiratory tract and respiratory patterns in rodent pups.
Ontogenetic changes of USVs were investigated to establish an index of stress in infant rats. The USVs were obtained by exposing infant rats to cold stress and were analyzed by real-time spectrography. USV waveforms consisted of four types, R-I, II, III and IV. These USVs were closely monitored at the age of 3-7 days in both sexes. From day 14, the frequency and incidence of USVs gradually decreased and had disappearedcompletely at the age of 21 days. Therefore, USVs should be useful in estimating the stress of infant rats between the ages of 3-7 days.
In this study, in order to clarify the kinetics of leptin, we focused on the ratio ofLeptin acts as an afferent signal in negative feedback regulating body fat mass [6,7,16]. As body weight increases, leptin concentrations in the blood increase, causing appetite to decrease and energy consumption to increase via the hypothalamus. As a result, body fat decreases. Thus, leptin is part of the neuroendcrine system maintaining a balance between calorie intake and energy consumption.However, resistance to leptin has been observed via genetic mutations associated with adiposis. The action of leptin is based on signals from peripheral fat stores to the hypothalamus via the blood-brain barrier, stimulating the central nervous system (satiety center and sympathetic nerves). In this process, many factors are involved, and mutation of the b 3 -adrenalin receptor gene or the presence of leptin antibodies, for example, can obstruct leptin transport into cerebrospinal fluid from blood or eliminate leptin from the blood.
Waveforms of isolation calls emitted from hamster pups, which were Syrian hamsters, Djungarian hamsters, and Chinese hamsters, were compared in a basic study on improving reproduction by decrease of cannibalism, because it was reported that maternal behavior was induced by isolation calls in rodents. Isolation calls of hamster pups, isolated from their mother and receiving cold stress, were collected by Real-Time Spectrogram (RTS), and calculated to spectrograms and power spectra by SIGNAL. Isolation calls consisted of ultrasonic vocalizations (USVs) and audible vocalizations (ADVs) in each species. Waveforms of isolation calls emitted by the hamster pups, were shown to have several characteristic features. In this study, the species specificity of isolation calls was shown in hamster pups. It would seem that the species specificity originates in the differences of sensitivity to cold stress via the autonomic nerve in hamsters.
In a preliminary test male rats were allowed to ingest a 1 M solution of sucrose from a drinking spout. After daily intake of sucrose became stabilized, the males were given a sexually receptive or non-receptive female and the bottle filled with sucrose solution simultaneously. The ingestive and copulatory behavior was observed for 60 min under illumination by a red lamp. The data obtained from this study showed that the ingestive behavior of males was suppressed by the presence of sexually receptive females and, conversely, the sexual behavior of males was not affected by the presence of a bottle of sucrose. These results suggest that the presence of a sexual partner inhibits appetitive ingestive behavior, i.e., the responses used by male rats to obtain food.
