This study is intended to attract attention to the problem of implementation of the construct of learner autonomy into the system of higher education in Ukraine. Although the concept of learner autonomy has a long tradition in the European educational systems, it is still in the process of its formation in Ukraine due to certain cultural and historical factors that defined the development of the Ukrainian society for the last century. Therefore, the research is concerned with the investigation of the current level of teachers' awareness and skills to enhance learner autonomy taking into account its socio-political prerequisites. From the early XXth century Ukrainian poets have transformed New York, a city of dreams, cultures and history, into an integral concept of poetic meanings. Being inspired by its urban vitality, they have created a whole range of poems on city's architecture, people and aura. Thus, New York itself turned into a text valuable for its cultural expression, as the poets talk about such features of the city as subway, bridges, skyscrapers, advertisements, and refer to many place names (Brooklyn, Broadway, Times Square, Wall Street, etc.), which shape city's cultural landscape and become verbal representations of the basic concepts of the Ukrainian mentality. The research shows that the main concepts which constitute the New York City cultural landscape as represented in the Ukrainian poems of the XXth-XXIst centuries are HELL / DEATH, MACHINE WORLD, WEALTH / DECORATIONS, POVERTY / IGNORANCE, LAND OF IMMIGRANTS, SOLITUDE. In other words, within the conducted research New York is viewed as a prism for the revelation of the Ukrainian national identity, and historical issues crucial for the Ukrainians in a diachronic perspective (XXth-XXIst centuries).
This research focuses on the analysis of the English non-professional subtitles of the Ukrainian films, produced by the amateur translators for whom English is a foreign language. Such exploration in the nature of fansubbing gives insights into the basic principles that define the notion of subtitling, examines the standards set to the audiovisual translation, and outlines the challenges fansubbers may face in the process of subtitling. The study is based on the following Ukrainian films of the second half of the XXth – beginning of the XXIst century: Chasing Two Hares (1961); Shadows of Forgotten Ancestors (1965); Prayer for Hetman Mazepa (2001). The analysis of the films is conducted on the syntactic, lexical, and grammatical levels, as well as on the level of fansubs screen presentation (spatial and temporal parameters). The study discusses fansubbers’ translation decisions from the perspective of their correlation with the established subtitling guidelines, and their effect on the foreign audience.
The research addresses the issues of rendering culture specific information in amateur subtitling from the Ukrainian into the English language. The fansubbing of proper names, culture-bound common nouns, formulaic sequences, sociolects and songs by the non-professional translators for whom English is a foreign language is the main focus of this study. Thus, the comparative analysis of the Ukrainian films Chasing Two Hares (1961), Shadows of Forgotten Ancestors (1965) and Prayer for Hetman Mazepa (2001), and their English subtitles reveals the difficulties fansubbers may face, as well as discusses translations strategies and techniques employed. Moreover, the study delves into reasons underlying the choice of translation approaches by nonprofessional subtitlers, including the collaborative nature of the process, the lack of theoretical knowledge and practical skills, as well as the insufficient mastering of the target language. Therefore, being a comprehensive study of the ways to convey cultural connotations of the original text by means of a foreign language on the level of fansubs, the research gives insight into the interconnection between the translation techniques used to render cultural references and the effect a target text may have on the audience.
