Introduction. Timely initiation of breastfeeding is defined as putting the newborn baby to the breast within one hour of birth. Despite the World Health Organization and national recommendations on timely initiation of breastfeeding, delayed initiation of breastfeeding is still a common problem. Objective. The aim of this study was to assess the timely initiation of breastfeeding and its associated factors at the public health facilities of Dire Dawa city, Eastern Ethiopia, 2021. Methods. A health facility-based cross-sectional study was employed from February 1, 2021, to March 2, 2021, at the public health facilities of Dire Dawa city among 302 mother-child pairs. The data were collected by systematic random sampling technique, entered into Epi data 4.2, and analyzed using Statistical Package of Social Science 25.0 version. Bivariate and multivariable logistic regression analyses were employed to estimate the crude and adjusted odds ratio with a confidence interval of 95%, and a P value of < 0.05 was considered statistically significant. Frequency tables, figures, and descriptive summaries were used to describe the study variables. Results. In this study, timely initiation of breastfeeding was 70.9% (95% CI: 65.6-75.8%). In a multivariable analysis, maternal age group of 25-40 years ( AOR = 2.21 , 95% CI = 1.09 − 4.48 ), multiparty ( AOR = 2.58 , 95% CI = 1.24 − 5.40 ), counselling on timely initiation of breastfeeding during antenatal care visits ( AOR = 2.38 , 95% CI = 1.16 − 4.88 ), institutional delivery ( AOR = 3.29 , 95% CI = 1.27 − 8.52 ), vaginal delivery ( AOR = 3.06 , 95% CI = 1.20 − 7.81 ), counselling on breastfeeding immediately after delivery ( AOR = 2.89 , 95% CI = 1.29 − 6.45 ), not practicing pre lacteal feeding ( AOR = 6.76 , 95% CI = 2.35 − 19.44 ), and having good practice of colostrum feeding ( AOR = 4.03 , 95% CI = 1.95 − 8.36 ) were associated with timely initiation of breastfeeding. Conclusion and Recommendation. Mothers who had practiced timely initiation of breastfeeding were low compared to the national recommendation (92%). Age of the mother, multiparity, counseling on timely initiation of breastfeeding, institutional delivery, vaginal delivery, counseling after delivery, not practicing prelacteal feeding, and having a good practice of colostrum feeding were predictors of timely initiation of breastfeeding. It indicates a need to encourage mothers to have antenatal care visits and institutional delivery.
Objective Incomplete abortion is the partial loss of the products of conception before viability and is the comments type of spontaneous abortion. This can be managed medically or surgically at a health facility by trained health care providers. However, women develop unfavorable management outcomes of incomplete abortion following the initial management. This study aimed to assess the management outcome of incomplete abortion in Injibara General Hospital, Northwest, Ethiopia. Results A health facility-based cross-sectional design was conducted from May 1/2018 to April 30/2020. A medical record review of 260 women who received abortion service was done and 236 cases managed for incomplete abortion were included in the study with a response rate of 90.8%. In this study, 12.3%) with [95% CI = 8.11–16.49] of the women developed unfavorable management outcomes of incomplete abortion. In the multivariable analysis women who are found in the age group of 15–25 years [AOR = 3.92, 95% CI-1.07-14.38], gestational age greater ≥ 13 weeks [AOR = 2.96, 95% CI = 1.12–7.83], seeking care after 24 hours of the onset of symptoms [AOR = 3.97, 95% CI = 1.04–15.21], and medical management of the incomplete abortion [AOR = 3.47, 95% CI = 1.07–11.27] were associated with unfavorable management outcome of incomplete abortion.
Introduction Colostrum is yellow to orange colored milk produced during a first few days of lactation and it is rich in nutrients and antibodies that have great role in health of the new born baby. Despite the world health organization recommends that every new born baby has to feed breast milk with colostrum within one hour of delivery; poor colostrum feeding practice is still a common problem in Ethiopia. Objectives The goal of this study was to assess the practice of colostrum feeding and related factors among women attending a child immunization clinic in governmental health facilities in Dire Dawa City, Eastern Ethiopia, in 2022. Method From February 1–30, 2022, in government health facilities in Dire Dawa city, 292 women with infants less than or equal to 12 months participated in this an institution-based cross-sectional study. Data were gathered by a method of systematic random sampling, and SPSS version 25 was used for analysis. The crude and adjusted odds ratios with a 95% confidence interval were calculated using bivariate and multivariate logistic regression models. A variable was deemed statistically significant if its P value was less than 0.05. Result 68.8% [95% CI: 63.4–74.3] of the moms in our study had good colostrum feeding habits. Living in an urban area [AOR = 2.52, 95% CI = 1.08–5.88], having at least a secondary education [AOR = 2.79, 95% CI = 1.12–6.98], having visited an antenatal clinic in the past [AOR = 3.12, 95% CI = 1.12–9.21], receiving counseling on when to start breastfeeding [AOR = 2.59, 95% CI = 1.02–6.59], receiving colostrum feeding counseling [AOR = 2.65, 95% CI = 1.12–6.30], having a professional attend the birth [AOR = 3.20, 95% CI = 1.23–8.31], getting information from a professional [AOR = 3.89, 95% CI = 1.54–9.82], and having good knowledge of colostrum feeding [AOR = 3.53, 95% CI = 1.56–7.96] were found to be associated with practice of colostrum feeding. Conclusion This study found that women who visit immunization clinics had a low degree of good colostrum feeding practice. Living in an urban area, being educated, having a history of antenatal visits, receiving counseling on when to start breastfeeding, having a professional attend the birth, getting information from a professional, and having a good understanding of colostrum feeding were all linked to the practice of colostrum feeding. To promote mothers' good colostrum feeding habits, prenatal care visits and breastfeeding education should be encouraged.
