This quantitative study aimed at measuring L2 lexical richness of productive vocabulary in the written production of Iranian EFL university students. In fact, this work was conducted to find out how rich the productive vocabulary of Iranian EFL university students is. Productive vocabulary knowledge is to express meaning through speaking or writing, retrieve and produce the appropriate spoken or written word form (Nation, 2001). Considering the importance of size and level of this knowledge among language learners, 210 writing samples such as final examinations and homework assignments of EFL undergraduate students majoring translation at BA level in semesters 2, 4, 6, and 8 at Islamic Azad University, Khorasgan branch, were analyzed by LFP (a tool to measure lexical richness in written texts). The generated profiles matched with available vocabulary frequency lists. The results of this work indicated an increase in the students' ability to use their lexical knowledge throughout years of study at university. However, this knowledge is under the suggested threshold proposed by recent studies. The findings of the research can shed light on the relationship between vocabulary growth and different input conditions. The results of this work can provide insights for language teachers and program planners in developing appropriate materials for enriching vocabulary among learners more effectively.
The prevalence of using social software in foreign and second language settings has caused a resurgence of interest in collaborative writing. This study investigates the benefits of collaborative and e-collaborative tasks on writing performance of the students in a process-oriented approach. It, in fact, examines the effects on the accuracy, complexity, and fluency of the written text produced by the learners. To this end, the quasiexperimental design was employed and 74 intermediate students at Islamic Azad University (Isfahan Branch) in Iran participated in the study. They were divided into three groups by random assignment in which two experimental groups were required to perform their tasks in collaboration while only one of them had access to Telegram Application outside the classroom. The control group followed the conventional method of learning how to write. The Measures of One-way ANCOVA, having compared the pretests and posttests results, showed a significant change in the accuracy and complexity of the written texts produced by the students in the experimental group applying e-collaboration. It also revealed that there was no significant change in the fluency of the written texts produced by the students.
This study explored the relationship between the use of audio-visual aids to improve the speaking ability of Iranian intermediate EFL learners and their personality type; namely, introversion/extroversion. To this end, The Comprehensive English Language Test (CELT) was given to 250 students to homogenize the sample. Out of this, 120 students whose scores fell one standard deviation above and below the mean were regarded as intermediate. Having found the homogeneous participants, the Eysenck Personality Inventory (EPI) was given to them, through which 60 introverts and 60 extroverts were selected as the main participants.The selected participants were interviewed and rated by three native like speaker raters and after the treatment the same raters evaluated the interviewees. The obtained results through a two-way ANOVA indicated that there was a statistically significant difference between extroverts and introverts in terms of audio-visual aids, but the difference was not that prominent and, therefore, it cannot be recommended as an operational pedagogical factor. It can also be concluded that the extroverts were generally better at speaking than introverts; however, there again the difference was not statistically noteworthy.
Sociolinguistics studies of language forms and functions should be an indispensable part of second/foreign language learning. Family or kinship address terms as an important feature of interface between language and society, can provide valuable sociolinguistic information about the interlocutors and their relationships. In line with the studies of these terms during the past few decades, this paper focuses on collecting and explaining different types of kinship terminology that Persian and Filipino interlocutors use in their conversations. The relevant terms have been collected by observation and interview. The study also highlights the differences between the two languages in using such terms based on social and cultural status. The findings of the study show that Persian is a gender sensitive and a dynamic language while Filipino is a sex-neutral and respect oriented language.
It is believed that textbooks play the most vital role in the classrooms. A lot of class time is spent on using textbooks, thus choosing the appropriate one requires full considerations. A need analysis is a useful instrument to identify learner's needs as a prerequisite for effective course design including course books. To this end, this study aims to investigate the foreign language learning needs of Iranian students studying in faculties of medicine. The total number of 113 medicine students participated in the study to answer the prepared questionnaire whose results were compared with 125 other students from different universities with a different textbook. To obtain the desired result, qualitative descriptive analysis was used to evaluate the data. The results indicated that the new textbook fulfills the need of students for their reading and listening skills in general and it is also more satisfying to medicine students. This study could be helpful for medical departments of universities to select their ESP textbooks more carefully.
