Study aimed to assess oral health knowledge, and reported practices among elderly with oral and dental problems. Design: Descriptive research design was used. Settings: This study was conducted in dental out-patients clinics of the General Assiut Hospital & the El-Eman General Hospital Quota sample was used to select elderly; the total number of sample was 1300 elderly. Tools: Three tools were used. Tool I: structured interview form. It includes socio-demographic characteristics, medical and oral health history, Tool II: to assess elderly oral health knowledge, it includes 20 questions. Tool III: it includes three parts (reported practice about tooth brushing, reported practice about general oral health care and brief oral health status examination. Results: The main results of study showed that total percent of the studied elderly had unsatisfactory knowledge and the vast majority of the studied elderly had inadequate reported practice about tooth brushing. Also it was noticed that more than one third of elderly never clean their mouth, while more than half had unhealthy oral state. Conclusion: The total percent and the vast majority of the studied elderly had unsatisfactory knowledge about oral health and inadequate practice about tooth brushing respectively. Recommendations: Providing health education program to the elderly people about oral health to improve their knowledge and practice.
Health promotion behavior is one of the main criteria for determining health that is recognized as the basic factor in catching numerous diseases. Aim of this study: to identify the factors affecting health promoting behaviors of elderly in rural areas. Subjects and method: A Descriptive research design was utilized. This study was conducted in four villages. The total number of sample was 1000 elderly. An interview questionnaire was used to collect data about: Personal information and availability of health care services, Health Promoting Lifestyle Profile scale (HPLPII), perception of chronic diseases and social support scale. Results: The main results of study 46.9% had moderate total health promoting behaviors while 42.6% had low total health promoting behaviors. Statistically significant difference between all personal data of elderly and their total health promoting behaviors. Also It was noticed that majority (89,9 %) of elderly have social support. Conclusion: the total score of elderly's health promoting behaviors who were living in Assiut & Sohag governorates ranged between the low and moderate level. Recommendations: The routine services for the elderly should improve the ability of health personnel to provide knowledge and information on HPB as well as to educate the caregivers and to motivate the elderly to engage in daily practice of HPB.
Diabetes Mellitus (DM) is a major public health concern which associated with increased morbidity, mortality, health care utilization and costs. Also it is the unremitting diseases that cause high rate of death around the world. Aim of study: To assess knowledge, attitudes and practices of study participants about diabetes in Mukalla City -Yemen. Setting: The study carried out in Mukalla City -Yemen. Design: survey research design. Sample: 1650 participants selected, the Subjects were selected based on a systematic random sample of houses in district. Parts of the study: Data collected by using three tools: Socioeconomic data, Tool (a): Participants s' knowledge regarding Diabetes mellitus. (b): included knowledge about attitudes of diabetic patients. Tool (c): knowledge about practices of diabetic patients. Results: Regarding age groups of the studied participants it found that the mean of participants' age were (70± 8.34). Majority of participants had poor knowledge and practices about diabetes and its management. Also, the vast majority had negative attitude toward DM. Conclusion: This study found that participants had poor knowledge, attitude and practices toward DM. Recommendations: A continuous and repeated health education guide on diabetes for diabetic patients could be designed to include all aspects of diabetes such as the diagnostic criteria, physical exercise and guideline for managing the disease.
