Alzheimer’s disease (AD) is a progressive, neurodegenerative disease characterized by extracellular deposits of amyloid beta (Aβ) protein and intracellular neurofibrillary tangles of hyperphosphorylated tau protein. Various studies suggest that the tau tangle pathology, which lies downstream to Aβ pathology, is essential to produce AD-associated clinical phenotype and thus treatments targeting tau pathology may prevent or delay disease progression effectively. In this context, our present study examined three polyphenol compounds (curcumin, EGCG and resveratrol) for their possible activity against two endogenous proteins (BAG2 and LAMP1) that are shown to play a vital role in clearing tau tangles from neurons. Human epidemiological and animal data suggest potential positive effects of these polyphenols against AD. Here, primary rat cortical neurons treated with these polyphenols significantly up-regulated BAG2 levels at different concentrations, while only EGCG upregulated LAMP1 levels, although at higher concentrations. Importantly, curcumin doubled BAG2 levels at low micromolar concentrations that are clinically relevant. In addition, curcumin also downregulated levels of phosphorylated tau, which may be potentially attributed to the curcumin-induced upregulation in BAG2 levels in the neurons. The present results demonstrate novel activity of polyphenol curcumin in up-regulating an anti-tau cochaperone BAG2 and thus, suggest probable benefit of curcumin against AD-associated tauopathy.
This study sought to determine factors associated with chlamydial infection in a low-prevalence college health setting and to determine the testing characteristics of a polymerase chain reaction (PCR) assay for chlamydial infection (AMPLICOR chlamydia test; Roche Diagnostic Systems, Indianapolis) in this population. Young women (n = 1,149) at a university student health clinic underwent testing for cervical chlamydial infection by PCR assay and culture; the characteristics of women with and without chlamydial infection were compared. Chlamydial infection was diagnosed for 26 students (2.3%). The sensitivity and specificity of PCR assay and culture were 85% and 100% and 54% and 100%, respectively. Students with chlamydial infection were more likely to be 20 years of age or younger, have symptoms, report prior chlamydial infection or gonorrhea, report exposure to a sexually transmitted disease (STD), be black, or have cervical signs during examination; however, none of these were significant predictors for asymptomatic women. PCR assay detected significantly more cervical infections than did culture in this college student population. These data are consistent with recommendations for testing college women with symptoms, STD exposure, or age of younger than 25 years.
Most Vietnamese young adults who experienced the American War were exposed to war-related violence, which can exert a lifelong impact. We analyze survey data collected among northern and central Vietnamese older adults in the 2018 Vietnam Health and Aging Study (N = 2,447) to examine the association between various war traumas, psychological distress, and suicidal ideation. Informed by life course and stress process perspectives, we use structural equation models with multiple mediators to analyze the relationship between mental health outcomes and five types of wartime stress exposure: loss of family and friends, witnessing death, malevolent living conditions, life threat, and moral injury. Our findings reveal enduring mental health impacts of war among survivors. Wartime stress exposure’s influence on mental health is mediated by recent comorbidities and stressful life events. Loss of family members, witnessing death, and malevolent living conditions during war are particularly salient risks for psychological distress.
The claim that Vietnamese inheritance patterns were bilateral and indicative of wider patterns of Southeast Asian women's autonomy or Vietnamese protonational uniqueness reflect major themes in the historiography on Vieệtnam. Past scholarship suggests that lawmakers of the Lê (1427–1783) and Mạc (1527–60) dynasties codified bilateral succession practices, attesting to the relative autonomy that Vietnamese women shared with their Southeast Asian counterparts. This essay challenges the claims of bilateralism and argues that Lê dynasty law, local custom, and legal practice preserved the principles of patrilineal succession. Though the language and adjudication of the law limited daughters' succession rights, ironically, these restrictions on their private rights enabled women to carve out spaces of authority in village economic and religious life. To avoid the transfer of their property to male relatives, some women instead transferred property to local institutions in order to lay claim over their personal property and to ensure the maintenance of their ancestral rites in perpetuity. In effect, rather than a system that elevated women's status, the property regime served as a site of contestation in which women could claim large economic and religious roles in local settings.
