The only manometric studies reported on the metabolism of Neisseria gonorrhoeae are those of Barron et al. (1932, 1933, 1934, 1936) on the breakdown of glucose, lactate, pyruvate, and other organic compounds, and of Krebs (1937) on the dismutation of pyruvate. Barron and Miller (1932) found that glucose was broken down in two stages. Lactic acid was formed during the glycolytic sequence, and this in turn was oxidized by way of pyruvic acid to acetic acid.
