University Students' Views on Domestic Violence Against Women: A Case StudyBackground: Domestic violence against women is a global concern that impacts public health negatively. Objective: The aim of this research was to determine the views and attitudes of university students studying in two separate departments towards domestic violence. Methods: This study is a descriptive research. Between December 2018 and June 2019, the research was conducted with 900 university students. The research included individuals who received undergraduate training in two departments, who were able to communicate in Turkish, were mentally stable and volunteered to participate in the study. For data collection, a participant introduction form created by the researchers in accordance with the literature, as well as a structured interview form comprising of open-ended questions and a case study, were used. The opinions on the case were organized, coded, and then the codes with similar characteristics were categorized. Sociodemographic findings were evaluated using descriptive statistical methods. The relationship between the participants' sociodemographic factors, their attitudes on domestic violence against women, and their views on the case was investigated using the chi-square (χ²) test. Results: The participants' average age was 20.67 ± 2.14, 63.5% were female, and 36.5% were male. When analyzing the opinions on the case, it was found that 10.3% of the participants had previously experienced a similar situation. If they were to make a report in such a case, 65.5% of the participants expressed they would appeal to the police. While 50% of females reacted passively in the case of domestic violence, 37.9% reacted actively, 36.5% of males reacted passively, and 49.3% reacted actively. It was found that 18.5% of women who were previously exposed to violence and 6.9% of men had previously encountered a situation similar to the case. Conclusion:The fact that there are students with a positive attitude towards violence against women, although at a low rate, highlighted the value of raising awareness on this issue. At this point, healthcare professionals have very important duties. In this context, health care professionals have critical responsibilities such as actively participating in the planning of education, health, legal, and social services, diagnosing domestic violence, and aiming to plan and implement educational services to raise social awareness about the issue.
