This study sheds light on the questions of how symbolic meanings come to emerge and signify certain representations of femininity as "worthless" (so as "worth" killing) in the processes leading to femicide. Given that both international literature and the studies on Turkey largely deal with femicides through quantitative approaches, our study contributes to ever-expanding body of literature through a qualitative research. In doing so, we go beyond oversimplification of understanding the justifications of women's murder, the processes of lethal violence, and social and cultural context of femicides by means of utilizing qualitative research. Grzyb's (2016) influential work that relies upon Bourdieusian conceptual tools, namely symbolic power and symbolic violence, largely frame the study, which is based on the analysis of the judicial records of murdered women in Diyarbakır. From this vantage point, this study suggests that there exists a significatory process relying upon symbolic power mechanisms that give meanigns to murdered women as lacking submissiveness, docility and respectability in diverse ways. This form of symbolic violence constitutes the crisis dynamics of symbolic power. In consequence, lethal violence ends up as a strategy to restore and reinvigorate symbolic power.
Abstract:The aim of present study is to evaluate the changes in land use and function of the Eastern Black Sea region's yaylas during years of 1973-2004 focusing on the case of Kazıkbeli and Alistire yaylas of Gümüşhane district. Both quantitative and qualitative research techniques has used in the study for collection of data. The change in land use in the yaylas during years of 1973-2004 has been determined with help of aerial photographs and geographic information system. Primary data have been collected by survey during field work in which 169 people have participated. The qualitative data have been collected through personal observations and in-depth interviews with local residents, visitors, managers and representatives of civil society organizations. As a result of the analysis it has been determined that the number of houses in Kazıkbeli Yayla and Alistire Yayla have increased by 400% and 227% respectively during years of . A significant increase has also occurred in road network in the yaylas during the same period. This situation has revealed a spatial change in both the yaylas. The other change in the yaylas is functional change. The yaylas once primarily used by local people as mountain pastures in summer for grazing activities until the 1980s have been currently used for recreation purposes and turned into holiday resorts.
