Voice hygiene is an important part of voice training process, so voice hygiene should be taken care for a healthy voice. This study which is conducted to evaluate voice hygiene of secondary school students who are at voice change period at 7th and 8th grade is a scanning model. Study group consists of 297 students in total, 142 male and 155 female students at the age of 13-15 who are studying at 7th and 8th grade of randomly chosen public schools in Meram Region of Konya. An analysis of the differences between the Vocal Health Test points according to the age, gender and grade variables of the students participating in the study was made. The Turkish adaptation was made by experts in the field and linguists. While the test is being prepared, each question was examined by the experts in the field for the validity of the scope, and it was stated that the questions represent the measured characteristic, they are also clear and understandable. As a result of the study, significant differences in Vocal Health Test points according to gender was found (P <0.05). The Vocal Health Test point of females is lower than that of males, and it can be said that females are more at risk of voice hygiene than males. There is a meaningful difference between vocal health test points in terms of age groups (P<0.05). The Vocal Health Test points of the students at the age of 14-15 are lower than the ones at the age of 13. It might be thought that voice change period is experienced more specifically at the age of 14-15, thus, if not paid attention, voice hygiene problem increases. When the grades are considered in terms of points, there is a significant difference between 7th grade and 8th grade students (P<0.05). It can be said that the 8th grade students are more inclined to have voice hygiene problems when compared to 7th grades. Analysis results between grade and age support each other.
This longitudinal study aimed to compare the vocal hygiene behaviours of secondary school students according to various variables, who pass through the voice change period and need to protect their voices in the musical education process. The data were collected from 178 students in the 2016-2017 academic year and from 119 students in the 2017-2018 academic year of a state secondary school, who were determined by convenience sampling. Vocal Health Test was used as a data collection tool in the comparison of the participants’ vocal hygiene behaviours, and the obtained data were analyzed through a t-test. The differences in the vocal health test scores of the participants were analyzed by comparing the 2017 results of the 7th-graders with those of 2018 when they became 8th graders, and also comparing the 8th graders of 2017 with those of 2018. As a result of the study, no significant difference was found between the averages of the vocal health test scores of the same group of students in terms of years and gender (p>0.05). However, a significant difference was found between the averages of the vocal health test scores of the 8th-graders in 2017 and those in 2018 (p
This study aimed to examine the cognitive structures of music teacher candidates related to the concept of ‘choir’. The data of this study, which was designed with a case study as one of the qualitative research methods, were collected from 110 pre-service music teachers through convenience sampling. Independent word association test and draw-write technique were used as data collection tools, and the obtained data were analyzed by content analysis method. Independent word association test produced findings regarding the following six categories; ‘classification of human voices’, ‘factors affecting vocal integrity’, ‘rules of singing’, ‘musical singing’, ‘complementary elements’ and ‘elements of vocal education in choir’ whereas the findings draw-write technique are similarly grouped under these categories, but no examples of the category of elements of vocal education in the choir were found. As a result of the research, it was found that there was an academic level cognitive structuring based on categories in the cognitive structures of the music teacher candidates related to the concept of ‘choir’, but there was a lack of knowledge in the category of the ‘elements of vocal education in the choir’, that they did not have sufficient scientific knowledge in making sentences, and that some participants held misconceptions about the definition of the choir and the concept of diaphragm-assisted breathing. In line with the results obtained from the research, it is recommended that the elements and functions of vocal education in the choir and the use of diaphragm-assisted breathing need to be taught with concrete expressions, supported through visual diagrams to ensure cognitive learning, and in this respect, active learning strategies should be applied. It is recommended to carefully focus on the conceptualization of the choir, the importance of the mental and physical preparation process and the necessity of speaking exercises before choral work.
