Much has been said and studied about Math anxiety providing hindrance to learners on achieving academic proficiency, and Math appreciation is seen to be the antidote in this case. It is the sum of the affirmative attitude of learners in dealing with Math-related concepts, the way they embrace cooperative learning in class, their positive response to challenges, and the way they apply into practical life the numeracy skills they learned in the four corners of the classroom. This study is focused on the mixed quantitative and qualitative exploration of the introduction of Math appreciation in the Department of Education, District of Lumban, Laguna. With nine participating elementary schools, 60 respondents in an online survey, and 9 participants in a focused group discussion, issues connected to Math appreciation were investigated. Sources of Math boredom, interventions applied, role of Math appreciation in learners' performance, support of school and community, and a look into the education system were the main parts of the qualitative investigation. On the quantitative part, Mathematics mean percentage score (MPS) of school years 2020-2021 and 2021-2022 were seen to have significant difference. Learners significantly perform better when Math appreciation was in context with teaching and learning process. Five themes were developed in this study: (1
This study focused on determining the impact of supervisory monitoring scheme, particularly classroom observation, to the learners' performance. Forty-two teachers from 10 elementary schools in the District of Victoria, Laguna, Philippines became part of the study by undergoing classroom observations and answering the survey questions pertaining to the (1) teaching-and-learning process, (2) learners' behavior, (3) teachers' and learners' enthusiasm, and (4) effect to learners' performance. The authors made use of qualitative technique in doing research as responses to qualitative questions were recorded, sorted and analyzed. Themes were developed in the responses of teachers as situations with and without classroom observations are compared and contrasted. For teaching-and-learning process, it was found out that supervisory monitoring aid in the realization of proper teaching-and-learning process. The flow of teaching becomes smooth for four reasons: (1) the teacher is directed by guiding principles in teaching, (2) the teacher makes the session a learner-centered encounter, (3) the teacher develops lesson from previously known facts to discovery of new knowledge, and (4) the teacher follows strengthening of knowledge through the fixing skill in the application, evaluation and enhancement part of the lesson. For learners' behavior, it was found out that classroom supervision is a classic solution to problems arising from learners' misbehavior. When there is supervisory monitoring, five things were observed: (1) learners avoid disruptive behavior, (2) they perform at their utmost, (3) they choose the words that they will contribute to the discussion, (4) they participate actively, and (5) they display due respect to the teacher and the observer. For learners' and teachers' enthusiasm, it was found out that supervision and monitoring are good machineries for teachers and learners to work harder and sustain energy. Enthusiasm of teachers and learners were seen to be at high level when there is classroom observation because of three reasons: (1) the teachers are well-prepared, (2) the needed materials are available on hand, and (3) the learners look forward for group work and fun activities. And for the impact of classroom observation to learners' performance, it was found out that classroom climate changes when there is classroom observation. Learners' perform well when there is classroom observation for four reasons: (1) the lively climate produce when there is classroom observation, (2) the respect of learners both to the teacher and the higher authority present, (3) the preparation of the teacher that makes learners participate actively, and (4) the energy and enthusiasm of the teacher that influences learners' response. Recommendations to sustain the impact of classroom observation to learners' performance were given to school heads, master teachers, classroom teachers, advisers, parents and community.
The effect of pandemic goes beyond inadequacy of acquisition of competency especially in modular distance learning, to non-attendance to school and non-enrolment in school. With the release of DepEd Order No. 34 series of 2022, the start of 5-day classes in all public schools nationwide has become a way of inviting learners who failed to enroll last school year because of non-readiness for distance learning become heightened. With this return of face-to-face interaction, recreation activity for kids last vacation before the start of school year 2022-2023 has become one way of increasing learners' interest in social interaction. Lumban Central Elementary School took the opportunity to encourage the participation of intermediate learners, especially those who were out-of-school last year, in a badminton training organized by Lumban Badminton Club. This study focused on narrating the journey of the learners who joined a specific type of recreational activity (badminton training) and their interest in coming back to school. The reason for the establishment of the sports club was detailed in this paper, the three-week program provided to them from orientation to graduation, and the impact of the recreation activity to the learners as evidenced by their enrolment this school year and their continuing study at present. This qualitative, narrative research highlights the importance of recreational activities like sports in heightening the desire of children to socialize, and that includes participation in academic activities which will boost their confidence to achieve something in life. A program of instituting recreational activity for learners with their family was laid down in this study, as the school can implement family day in school compound or in the community this school year or in the coming years as the pandemic totally subsides. Day-to-day teaching episodes is also suggested as continuous improvement project. Recommendation to teachers, school heads, parents and community, high officials and future researchers were laid down at the end of the study.
This study focused on resiliency of school leaders in Victoria District, Laguna, Philippines amidst pandemic. Seventeen elementary and secondary principals became part of the study by undergoing survey questions pertaining to the (1) promotion of community cohesiveness, (2) sustained communication, (3) attention to mental and psychosocial health and, (4) welcoming feedback. The author made use of qualitative and quantitative techniques in doing research as responses to survey questions were recorded, sorted, analyzed and, interpreted. It was found out that school heads of Victoria District have very high resiliency in terms of promotion of community cohesiveness, sustained communication, attention to mental and psychosocial health, and welcoming feedback. School heads promote community cohesion by engaging families and stakeholders in all the school programs and by using various formats during distance learning. Some schools provided unstructured opportunities for small-group connections. To sustain communication among the internal and external stakeholders of the school community, school head gave clear and direct communication using different platforms based on DepEd Orders and memorandums. To combat epidemic, school heads conducted orientations, meetings and webinars for the entire community through social media platforms about mental and psychosocial wellness because when schools clearly prioritized attention to mental health, it greatly enhanced feelings among students and adults that they were genuinely valued. Welcoming feedback was one of the top priorities of school heads to receive a clear response from the community, also both teachers and learners, as they share their feelings and receive specific feedback on what was going well at school and what might be improved. Recommendations to school heads were laid down to sustain their resiliency at all cost.
