Across two studies and five samples, we introduce the Chinese construct of moqi (a tacit understanding of another person’s expectations and intentions) as a key, but heretofore overlooked, aspect of supervisor–subordinate relationships. In Study 1, using qualitative and quantitative methods, we develop a subordinate-focused moqi scale and establish its discriminant and criterion-related validity. In Study 2, using three-wave data from three sources (subordinates, coworkers, and supervisors), we test an integrative, information-based model explicating (1) subordinates’ actions that are useful in acquiring the necessary information to develop moqi with their supervisor; (2) boundary conditions affecting subordinates’ sensitivity to information and, hence, their development of moqi with the supervisor; and (3) the informational process underlying subordinate moqi’s positive relationship with work effectiveness. Findings suggest that subordinates’ implicit and explicit feedback seeking positively predicted their subsequent perceptions of moqi with a supervisor and, moreover, that the relationship between implicit feedback seeking and subordinate moqi is enhanced by higher subordinate power distance orientation and face consciousness. Results also indicate that subordinate moqi influences task performance and reward recommendations for subordinates via the mediation of increased goal clarity, and the indirect effects is more pronounced for subordinates with higher power distance orientation. We offer an important discussion of moqi’s cultural nuances and make several suggestions for a robust future research agenda.
STING functions as both an adaptor protein signaling cytoplasmic double-stranded DNA and a direct immunosensor of cyclic diguanylate monophosphate (c-di-GMP). The crystal structures of the C-terminal domain of human STING (STING(CTD)) and its complex with c-di-GMP reveal how STING recognizes c-di-GMP. In response to c-di-GMP binding, two surface loops, which serve as a gate and latch of the cleft formed by the dimeric STING(CTD), undergo rearrangements to interact with the ligand.
The ballistic ejection of liquid drops by electrostatic manipulating has both fundamental and practical implications, from raindrops in thunderclouds to self-cleaning, anti-icing, condensation, and heat transfer enhancements. In this paper, the ballistic jumping behavior of liquid drops from a superhydrophobic surface is investigated. Powered by the repulsion of the same kind of charges, water drops can jump from the surface. The electrostatic acting time for the jumping of a microliter supercooled drop only takes several milliseconds, even shorter than the time for icing. In addition, one can control the ballistic jumping direction precisely by the relative position above the electrostatic field. The approach offers a facile method that can be used to manipulate the ballistic drop jumping via an electrostatic field, opening the possibility of energy efficient drop detaching techniques in various applications.
EfeB/YcdB is a member of the dye-decolorizing peroxidase (DyP) protein family. A recent study has shown that this protein can extract iron from heme without breaking the tetrapyrrole ring. We report the crystal structure of EfeB from Escherichia coli O157 bound to heme at 1.95 Å resolution. The EfeB monomer contains two domains. The heme molecule is located in a large hydrophobic pocket in the C-terminal domain. A long loop connecting the two domains extensively interacts with the heme, which is a distinctive structural feature of EfeB homologues. A large tunnel formed by this loop and the -sheet of C-terminal domain provides a potential cofactor/substrate binding site. Biochemical data show that the production of protoporphyrin IX (PPIX) is closely related to the peroxidation activity. The mutant D235N keeps nearly the same activity of guaiacol peroxidase as the wild-type protein, whereas the corresponding mutation in the classic DyP protein family completely abolished the peroxidation activity. These results suggest that EfeB is a unique member of the DyP protein family. In addition, dramatically enhanced fluorescence excitation and emission of EfeB-PPIX was observed, implying this protein may be used as a red color fluorescence marker.
A small number of easily identified characteristics (sex, age, race, insurance type, comorbidities, diagnosis, and provider case volumes) were significantly associated with longer lengths of stay, readmission, and revision surgery. Consideration of these factors and their effects may guide efforts to improve patient safety and to manage the costs associated with these adverse outcomes.
