Sufficient food production, stable food supply, and environmental protection in urban surroundings aremajor global concerns for future sustainable cities. This is due to exponential population growth, increasingurban dwellings, climate change, and limited natural resources. The solution to these problems lies inthe plantation of fruit and vegetable home gardens, the utilization of rooftops and small plots for small-scalevegetable production, which can provide families with sufficient production and for income generation. But there is a need, to integrate information technology tools, breeding crops suited for urban farming, andclosing the on water, waste, and energy, to help maintain consistent food supply as well as make agriculture more sustainable. This review discusses the significant features of contemporary urban horticulture, inaddition to illustrating traditional, technology and innovations essential for urban horticulture to meet allfood and nutritional requirements of growing urban populations.
An investigation was carried out to examine the quality attributes of fermented beverages obtained from the combination of rose petals and cinnamon powder. The experiment consisted of 12 treatments and 3 replications in CRD design. The treatment T1 and T2 were made of 100% rose and 100% cinnamon each. The other treatments consists of; T3 (99% rose + 1% cinnamon), T4 (98% rose + 2% cinnamon), T5 (97% rose + 3% cinnamon), T6 (96% rose + 4% cinnamon), T7 (95% rose + 5% cinnamon), T8 (94% rose + 6% cinnamon), T9 (93% rose + 7% cinnamon), T10 (92% rose + 8% cinnamon), T11 (91% rose + 9% cinnamon), T12 (90% rose + 10% cinnamon) respectively. The yeast Saccharomyces cerevisiae was used for fermentation. The maximum nutritional values in freshly fermented beverages were; phenol (199.76 GAE/100 ml), anthocyanin (7.00 mg/100 ml), alcohol (12.41%), ascorbic acid (5.46 mg/100 ml), reducing sugar (1.58%), non-reducing sugar (8.00%), total sugar (1.99%) and TSS (19.67 oB). The treatment with 100% cinnamon showed strong antimicrobial properties throughout experimentation. However, the proportion of cinnamon added to the beverages significantly improved the nutritional value of the beverages. With the storage period, phenol, ascorbic acid, and alcohol content in the beverages increased whereas other parameters were found to be fluctuating during storage. The beverages obtained from the combination of rose petal and cinnamon powders contained a high amount of vitamins and antioxidants and were highly acceptable.
The determinant factor of agricultural productivity is the Climate and any changes will affect and become challenging for agriculture. And the predominant causal factor for climate change is the emission of greenhouse gases into the atmosphere, mainly due to anthropological activities such as deforestation for conventional cultivation. As a result, it has become clearer by the day that there is a need to reform our food system from a conventional to a sustainable one. The Nemo’s Garden, off the coast of Noli, Italy is a unique and futuristic underwater hydroponic farm for the cultivation of terrestrial crops which may provide an alternative eco-friendly and sustainable system to conventional horticulture, contribute to sustainable food production, with a positive effect on the surrounding environment. By harnessing the ocean’s environmental benefits-temperature stability, evaporative water generation, CO2 absorption, abundant oxygen, and pest protection—they aim to prove the viability of cultivating herbs, fruit, and vegetables underwater. The culinary herb basilwas initially taken as a model plant and is well adapted in the biosphere environment, but now other crops like strawberries, tomatoes, courgettes, beans, mushrooms, lettuce, stevia, aloe vera, orchids, etc are being successfully grown in the biospheres. The project is under research and pharmaceutical companies are willing to explore this alternative solution for growing plants and to reveal interesting discoveries for the future.
