A 16-YEAR-OLD BOY sustained profound deafness at the age of 14 months due to pneumococcal meningitis. The episode of meningitis was associated with an upper respiratory tract infection, without evidence of otitis media. There was a 3-day interval between the onset of disease and 2 weeks of penicillin therapy. Hearing aids were of no benefit in providing speech recognition. A computed tomographic scan of the temporal bones was performed, and the results are shown in Figure 1 and Figure 2.
