Skull base osteomyelitis (SBO) also commonly known as malignant otitis externa was first described by Meltzer and Kelemen in 1959. Prior to the advent of the antibiotic era, this disease carried a poor prognosis with significant morbidity. It often proved fatal with mortality rates as high as 50%. Commonly seen in the immunocompromised patients, diabetes mellitus is an important associated comorbidity in the pathophysiologic development of this disease. Treatment is instituted by medical therapy with surgery having a limited role. Surgical intervention has a limited role, for example, in fungal SBO. Such cases may require local debridement and intraoperative tissue biopsies for histopathologic confirmation. This is to demonstrate fungal invasion into the skull base, as well as to exclude other sinister differential diagnoses like squamous cell carcinoma of temporal bone. In this case report, we present a rare case of candida SBO and the literature review.
Branchial cleft cysts generally occur unilaterally at the lateral aspect of the neck. Bilateral branchial cysts are rare and may have familial associations. We report a rare case of non-syndromic bilateral branchial cyst in a 23-year-old woman who presented with chronic bilateral, progressively enlarging painless neck swellings. Complete surgical excision of the bilateral cyst was done. A histopathological examination confirmed the diagnosis. Precise diagnosis with early and complete surgical excision of branchial cysts may help prevent recurrence and other complications.
Concha bullosa (CB) is a pneumatised middle turbinate. Although CB is the most common variant of the middle turbinate, the formation of mucocele or mucopyocele of CB has been rarely reported. The inflamed mucosal lining of the concha bullosa may lead to mucocele formation. Infection of the retained secretion will later on lead to mucopyocele. We report a 12-year-old girl presented with right unilateral nasal blockage associated with rhinitis symptoms. She was initially diagnosed as nasal polyp which later on turned out to be a mucocele histpathologically.Bangladesh Journal of Medical Science Vol.17(4) 2018 p.691-693
Children eating behaviour was hypothesised as one of the factors associated with growth development as well as malnutrition among toddlers. This study aimed to explore the relationship between child eating behaviour among toddlers aged two to four years old and their respective Body Mass Index (BMI) or BMI for Age Z (BAZ). A cross-sectional study was conducted among parents and caregivers with toddlers between two to four years old, in the Klang Valley. The validated Children’s Eating Behaviour Questionnaire (CEBQ) was used to measure their child eating habit and behaviours. A total of 96 parents or caregivers of toddlers participated. Girls had lower BAZ than boys (-1.20 vs -0.15, p=0.030), and significantly higher satiety responsiveness and food fussiness scores (3.14 vs 2.80, p=0.005 and 2.83 vs 2.44, p=0.005 respectively). Emotional overeating had opposite effects on BMI and BAZ between genders. In this study, girls aged two to four year old had lower BMI and BAZ than boys; and demonstrated higher food avoidance behaviour. Emotional overeating is associated with opposite effects on BMI and BAZ between boys and girls. Among all toddlers, satiety responsiveness and food fussiness were associated with lower BAZ.
