Abstract-In managing online learning, most educational institutions utilize Learning Management Systems (LMS).It is a learning platform that allows the administrators of the institution to manage and monitor learners, teachers and content of courses. Learners of this online learning environment have access to a variety of online learning tools and features that allow them to communicate with peers as well as instructors. Hence, these learners need to be equipped with appropriate learning strategies, particularly metacognitive strategies to help them manage their learning. As for English as a Second Language (ESL) learners, employing appropriate metacognitive strategies may help them regulate, plan, manage and monitor their learning. The study aims to investigate the metacognitive online reading strategies of adult learners of an ESL course at Universiti Technology MARA, Malaysia. A survey was used to gather information of these adult learners in semester one and two. The survey is adapted from the online survey of reading strategies or OSORS developed by . The results of the survey reveal that the learners mostly used global reading strategies followed by problem solving strategies and support reading strategies. Also, independent t-test reveals that there is no significant difference between semester one and semester two students in using global reading strategies, problem solving strategies and support reading strategies. As indicated by the results of this study, it can be concluded that the learners have learning goals and purpose since they used mainly global reading strategies, but they do not effectively utilize online learning tools and features that are available in the LMS.
Reading and writing have now become more democratic. Reading has taken to a new level since the internet has become the main source of reading. Reading is seen as no longer a one-way communication, instead, it has become interactive. Readers easily can contact the writer or co-write or become authors themselves and self-publish their work online. Social media participation in digital social reading has allowed this phenomenon to take place. One of these social reading platforms is Wattpad. Wattpad is a recent example of how a new generation of influential and innovative writers and readers collaborate in this social media publication. Wattpad stories are known to be 'alive and breathing' as writers and readers can participate in the inline comments, thus creating an online social reading platform. The inline comments from readers and authors were investigated in this research. A qualitative method of textual and content analysis was done to assess the inline comments of a fanfiction story over a social online reading platform which is the Wattpad. It is hoped this study will help to give an insight into digital social readers among Malaysian undergraduates,
Young adults or known as Generation Z (those born after 1993) noted for their digital habits nevertheless, not many studies underwrite studies of reading habits, especially among Malaysian young adults. The reading trend has enormously changed from reading printed materials to reading online. These led to significant changes in the reading habits, attitudes, and interests of the young adult readers. Therefore, this study was undertaken to investigate the changes in the reading habits, interests, and attitudes of young adults in Malaysia. The present study uses a purposive sampling of 238 young adults of a higher institution in Malaysia with samples born between 1993 to 1995 (18- 24 years old during the research) who grew up in Malaysia and were readers of online and offline reading materials. A mixed-method explanatory approach was adopted whereby a set of questionnaires and semi-structured interviews were given to the samples to determine their reading experiences in terms of reading interests, habits, and attitudes of these young adult readers. Data were analyzed using Drouilard's (2009) framework to identify their reading experiences. The results have several potentially critical implications for young adult readers. The study revealed that frequency, preferences, and characterization of reading among young adults. Such as factors identified as motivation for young adults to read intrinsically with association with friends, features of online reading, and online social discussion on the internet were identified. Another implication of the finding showed that online comments from the online readers and reading materials such as fan fiction, visual novels, and Wattpad as the main interest in reading among young Malaysian adults. Nevertheless, the findings also pointed out that avid readers among the young Malaysian adults conveyed that reading materials with transmedia features were preferred. With this in view, it is hoped that the need for more research regarding the multidimensionality of reading among young adults in Malaysia.
