Personal, social, environmental, and policy and programme-related barriers and facilitators influence the amount of activity children with disability undertake. The barriers to physical activity have been studied more comprehensively than the facilitators.
The addition of motivational interviewing to usual care may lead to modest improvements in physical activity for people with chronic health conditions.
Young people with cerebral palsy participate in significantly lower levels of habitual physical activity than their peers, and less than recommended guidelines. Long-term negative health consequences of inactivity such as metabolic dysfunction, cardiovascular disease and poor bone density are therefore more likely.
