This article is intended to inform the public about a rather large and representative publishing project in sociolinguistics, and at the same time to ask the readers to send in their critical comments. This handbook of sociolinguistics will be published by Walter de Gruyter
This contribution will compare the acquisition of German of three adult Poles over a period of 3 years. As background to the acquisition of grammatical features in German (e.g., morphology, auxiliary and modal verbs, constituency structure, temporality), an acquisition profile of the informants will be constructed. With the help of computer-aided corpus descriptions, the sequences in acquisition will be specified. We will try to specify the notion of grammaticalization for second language acquisition. The contribution will further investigate the question as to which psycholinguistic parameters are responsible for the elaboration of learner varieties. Our findings show that cognitive factors have to be taken into account to explain the varying degree of success in the acquisition process.
