In patients with early extrapulmonary adult respiratory distress syndrome who underwent a PEEP trial, recruitment maneuvers failed to induce a sustained improvement of oxygenation and venous admixture.

In patients with early extrapulmonary acute respiratory distress syndrome, a sustained inflation performed after 6 hrs of prone positioning induced further and sustained improvement of oxygenation and venous admixture in both responders and nonresponders to prone positioning.

In this study, we have shown that the occupational exposure to waste anesthetic gases is comparable when using the cuffed oropharyngeal airway (COPA) and the laryngeal mask airway and is increased when using the face mask. Therefore, the COPA may be a valuable alternative to the conventional face mask during short surgical procedures.

The limited availability of donor hearts means that an increasing number of transplantation candidates are temporarily or permanently supported by mechanical circulatory assist devices. We report a patient undergoing implantation of a Novacor left ventricular assist device who suffered fatal aortic dissection on postoperative day 11 after satisfactory recovery from multiple organ failure. The dissection of the aorta initially presented as an embolic peripheral ischemia. Early complete echocardiography is thus warranted to rule out dissection.
