English language has always been a challenging subject for some students in Malaysia (Normazidah Che Musa, Lie & Hazita Azman, 2012). Despite the fact that these students have learned English for almost ten years in school, they are still facing problems to learn it mostly due to language anxiety (Nur Afiqah Ab. Latif, 2015). This study was conducted to identify the effectiveness of peer-tutoring approach as one way to lower the students’ anxiety level as well as to boost their motivation in learning English language. This study was conducted in a public university in Malaysia where seventeen pre-diploma students were selected to join a ‘Mentor-mentee’ programme as the mentees while five diploma (semester three) students were chosen to be the mentors. The mentors were asked to coach the pre-diploma students in learning English language by using four interesting and interactive English games namely ‘Truth or Dare’, ‘Roll the Dice, ‘Spot the Error’ and ‘Once upon a Time’. The researchers used a google form to get responses from the participants and the results show that the peer-tutoring programme has appeared to create a more relaxed and friendly environment for the students to learn English, thus boost their motivation in learning English.
Body shaming is a form of bullying that exposes victims to many emotional, physical, and social risks and consequences. This study aims to determine whether university students recognise the implications of body shaming on individuals and discover the students' perspectives regarding their body image. Fifty students from five different faculties (Civil Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Chemical Engineering, and Hotel and Tourism) in a public university participated as the respondents in this study. A questionnaire was created in a Google form and distributed to the students via the WhatsApp application. The questionnaire focused on respondents' awareness of the implications of body shaming and their perspectives regarding their body image. The data were analysed using descriptive analysis and described in frequency and percentage. Based on the results, most respondents recognised the implications of body shaming. However, more than half of the respondents appeared to have an unfavourable opinion about their bodies. This study has demonstrated that body shaming can cause severe impacts on adolescents and society in terms of psychological concerns, body image dissatisfaction, academic implications and eating disorders. Hence, proper actions must be taken to cultivate positive attitudes and wellbeing in our community.
Covid-19 has been around us for over a year and due to massive restrictions, many nations are still struggling to formulate an ideal education system. As a result of the emergency outbreak, the education system is compromised and this has a direct impact on both instructors and students. The latter were found to experience more significant challenges to continue learning in this crisis, and this requires eclectic strategies for the system to properly function again. Since the number of Covid-19 cases surges every day in Malaysia, it is critical that we address the most pressing concerns that students are currently facing when online learning is abruptly employed to substitute face-to-face (FTF) education. Thus, this paper identified specific challenges faced by the students of Universiti Teknologi MARA Cawangan Pulau Pinang, as well as the opportunities that came with the disruptions that were predicted to be used as optimal ways to receive and distribute online learning information successfully. In this study, 70 participants took part, and the data was gathered through a structured interview that was recorded on videos. The findings demonstrated that, despite the challenges, learners are gradually accepting these new standards, provided suitable learning techniques are used in the education system.
The purpose of this study was to examine the perceptions of the lecturers of the Academy of Language Studies (APB), UiTM Cawangan Pulau Pinang (UiTMCPP) with regard to problems in writing formal letters concerning language style. Language style is a very important element in the writing of a formal letter because it can affect a recipient’s views of the sender of the letter. If the language style used is inaccurate, it may also result in misunderstandings between a sender and a recipient and may cause a program being delayed due to errors in the letter. The research method used was descriptive which involved the analysis of data from a questionnaire distributed to 30 respondents (APB UiTMCPP lecturers). The data collected was analyzed using SPSS software version 23. The findings showed that the lecturers were indeed confused about the language style of formal letter writing and that the highest percentage belonged to the item that indicated that the majority of the lecturers agreed that they were mistaken about the correct use of slogans / motto in formal letter writing. The study is expected to assist the researchers in providing a solution to facilitate the lecturers at the APB UiTMCPP in writing formal letters.
