Rumah Kutai in Perak is amongst the oldest surviving traditional Malay house and is gradually disappearing from the indigenous cultural landscape of Malaysia. Therefore, it is crucial to preserve such precious Malay heritage especially on the unique construction methods for the next generation references. The subject of the research is construction techniques of the traditional Malay houses which is emphasized on the indigenous house of Perak, Rumah Kutai. This research, basically exploring on how Rumah Kutai is being constructed from the beginning until the end. Also, to examine the construction techniques especially on the jointing system (tanggam) of several components in Rumah Kutai. The research aims to study the construction techniques of traditional Rumah Kutai.
Malaysia has a significant amount of heritage timber buildings located in every part of the country. The buildings symbolised the origin of the country’s vernacular architectural style as well as the historical representation of the local community culture and its surrounding context. However, due to the combustible nature of timber, these heritage timber buildings are highly exposed to the risks of fire. Currently, there are no proper fire safety guidelines specifically for heritage buildings which can act as a good reference for the building owners or conservators in safeguarding the heritage buildings. The purpose of this study is to identify existing active fire safety measures in selected heritage timber buildings in Malaysia. The study was conducted through literature findings and observation of four selected heritage timber buildings. The study had identified that all four heritage timber buildings were equipped with very basic active fire safety measures.
Fire evacuation simulation for buildings has greatly enhance the safety of escaping efficiently and give valuable insight for better layout permutation. The aim of this article is to evaluate the safety risk of fire evacuation given a random chance that emergency exits are obstructed. A case study of evacuation pathway was evaluated against fire safety codes and practices in Malaysia. AnyLogic was used to simulate fire evacuation, assuming peak occupancy, with three randomly obstructed emergency exit pathways. Results show that though the floorplan fulfils safety criteria, the risk was high which requires adjustment. Monte Carlo analysis indicates the performance of risk of obstruction of all three
