Language Learning Strategies (LLS) and their advantages in enhancing and acquiring second language learning skills are not consciously known, especially to young learners. The main objective of this study is to identify the most preferred language learning strategies by the Year 5 primary pupils in rural areas in Southern Malaysia and the least practiced strategies in learning the English language. This study adopted a quantitative research design by adapting the Strategy Inventory for Language Learning questionnaire as a research instrument. The data was collected from 70 respondents by using a simple random sampling technique and then analysed descriptively. Through a comparison of means, this study had discovered that various strategies were practiced by the respondents. However, the most employed strategy is memory strategies, while the affective strategies are favoured the least. It is hoped that this study may give some insights and benefits to the ESL teachers in enhancing their teaching and learning process by introducing and emphasising various learning strategies for better selfregulated learning.
Recently, many students globally have embraced social media to facilitate learning. This study investigates the perception of students in using Instagram interactive face filters to enhance their speaking skills. The study is significant in identifying main areas in online learning and helps to understand the importance of using technology in learning. By researching how pupils perceive the use of interactive face filters in online learning, the study indicates that there are improved learning outcomes. Teachers, students, and institutions can use the present study to incorporate interactive online learning. The research uses a systematic method to gather, interpret, and draw conclusions of the research data; a quantitative survey method to collect data. The participants comprised 30 of the year five pupils of mixed levels from a Chinese school in rural Sabah. Data was collected online using Google Form, which comprised the questionnaire that participants filled. Regarding perception of students on using Instagram 100% of the respondents agreed that the application helps them in language learning and the necessity of it in learning speaking skills. Also, 80% of the respondents strongly agree that using Instagram is more enjoyable than regular speaking activity and the other 20% agree with the statement. These findings supported the TAM model, which suggested that pupils will be more attracted to incorporate new technology in their learning. The result also found that pupils are having fun and are more relaxed in speaking the English language while trying out the filters, thus motivating them to speak English more confidently. Education stakeholders should perform broader research on the topic to ensure more reliable findings. Since the current research was drawn from only 30 participants, there is a need to acquire data that can be used in a larger spectrum.
This article analyses English language learning strategies adopted by students in learning English for Specific Purposes (ESP). Despite a broad study in language learning, there is still a scarcity of empirical evidence to emphasise the importance of LLS and the impact on students' performance for ESP specifically. This topic is significant in reflecting the strategies and their adaptability by targeted students. It involves a systematic review of literature and studies from Malaysia and other parts of the world between 2009 and 2021. It references published research studies, analyses books and strategies students use in learning English and especially for specific purposes and reading skills. Out of 50 previous studies, 20 were chosen for a thorough analysis ranging from research journals, reports, and books on definitions and growth and development of ESP, and strategies for learning ESP. The studies revealed that though the majority of ESP students in Malaysia have embraced self-directed English language learning strategies, there is still a gap in the English proficiency in the Malaysian education system. While acknowledging the limitation occasioned by a smaller sample size, the study recommended the adoption of language learning from an out-of-classroom perspective and understanding the significance of Business English to students.
Students' mastery of the English language is a major concern despite the various strategies implemented whether at primary and secondary levels or in higher institutions. The purpose of the current research is to examine the challenges encountered in instructional learning activities when learners are required to apply the language learning strategies in learning English. The goal of the research is to identify the barriers and formulate solutions that can be implemented to achieve the learning goals. This qualitative research approach was conducted by gathering data from commerce students in a polytechnic through a semistructured interview. Based on the thematic analysis conducted, findings have shown that the students are highly burdened by anxiety in their attempt to integrate LLS into learning the English language and lack motivation. The implication of this study bridges a gap in knowledge regarding the challenges in learning the English language by providing insights into ways in which the use of LLS in polytechnics can be improved. Therefore, educators should understand the underlying problems that may contribute to the reduction in morale for a better language learning process.
