AbstractObjectives -Various efforts are being made to disseminate lifestyle modification information. What is the role of health information in building patients self-efficacy in lifestyle modification? The research examined level of access to lifestyle modification information for patients with chronic diseases in two Federal Government Teaching Hospitals in South East Nigeria. It explored the relationship between self-efficacy and access to lifestyle modification information and also factors that are associated with self-efficacy when patients have access to lifestyle modification information. Methods -The research is a cross-sectional correlation study that used a questionnaire to collect data. (See Appendix A.) Sample was 784 patients with chronic diseases. Questionnaires were Evidence Based Library and Information Practice 2016, 11.2 137 distributed to the patients as they attended clinics in the medical and surgical outpatients' clinics of the hospitals. Results -Findings showed access to lifestyle modification information was significantly and positively correlated with self-efficacy. Multiple Regression analysis suggest that age, type of illness, and length of treatment in the teaching hospitals were associated with self-efficacy when patients have access to lifestyle modification information. Conclusion -It will be pertinent that demographic and disease factors are considered when making lifestyle modification information available to patients for greater self-efficacy.
This study was undertaken in order to highlight and compare the curricula of the different Library Schools in the tertiary institutions, South East, Nigeria. This is a descriptive survey, using a checklist (the minimum academic standards provided by the different regulatory bodies-NUC and NBTE). All the ten Library Schools in SouthEast , Nigeria, were used for the study. The results of the study reveal that there are no uniformity and conformity in the curricula run in the Universities, but there are uniformity in the Polytechnics curricula. In spite of the uniformity & conformity with its regulatory body's minimum standard, the Polytechnic curriculum is not suitable for registerable status as Librarians to be accorded to its products. The regulatory bodies rely heavily and wholly on professional bodies to provide their different professional and academic programmes standards. The NLA and LRCN are not doing much yet in the area of standardization and harmonization of the curricula so as to train Librarians/Information Scientists of this 21 st century.
The purpose of this study was to find out the effect of computer aided instruction on the interest of students in electronic libraries course. The population consisted of 100 electronic libraries students in Library and Information Science Departments in federal tertiary institutions in Anambra State, Nigeria.A27 item structured questionnaire was used for data collection. It was subjected to content validity by experts in Computer Science, Library and Information Science, Vocational Education and Measurement and Evaluation. Two research questions and two hypotheses were formulated to guide the study. The study adopted quasi-experimental design. Pretest-posttest equivalent groups was used. The sample for the study consisted of sixty third year library and information science students. The internal consistency of the instrument was determined using Kuder-Richardson Formular 21 which yielded a reliability coefficient of 0.92. Mean and standard deviation were used to answer the research question. Experimental group was taught through computer aided instruction whereas control group was taught through modified lecture method. On the completion of six weeks, the level of interest of the two groups was determined. The findings revealed that the computer aided instruction method of teaching enhanced students’ interest in electronic libraries than the modified lecture method. It was recommended that lecturers should adopt the use of computer aided instruction in teaching of electronic libraries in tertiary institutions in order to enhance students’ interest in electronic libraries.
Serials being important to students and researchers as they contain the most current and relevant information that can be used for academic and research purposes needs to be assessed periodically to determine if they are still relevant to the users. This study therefore examines the analysis of serials citations in graduate-students’ theses as a functional tool for effective management of serials in university libraries using theses submitted from 2013 to 2021 in Library and information Science of four government owned universities in eastern region of Nigeria as case in point. The study was meant to provide answers to three research questions which formed the guide while a descriptive survey design was applied with a population of 203 which stood as the total number of masters’ degree theses produced by the four universities within the period under study. The main instruments used in collecting data for this study were the researcher-designed checklists with which 8445 serials citations were collected and analyzed using descriptive statistics of mode, mean and range and data presented in tables, charts and graphs using frequencies and percentile. The outcome of the study revealed that journals with 76% citations were the most cited against conference proceedings/reports with 20% and the least cited being government publications with only .5% citations. It was further established that multi authorship is the most cited authorship pattern in the graduates’ theses whereas the average age of serials cited were within the age bracket of 0 - 18. The conclusion drawn is that with the most cited type(s) of serials, serials titles, ages of serials and preferred authorship pattern known through citations analysis of serials in research reports, the university librarian is better placed as to knowing which serials to select, acquire and how to have them organized for easy accessibility and retrieval by users as well as the amount of money to be earmarked for their acquisitions which invariably will bring about prudent management of the library budget in this period of shrinking budget for academic libraries. The study therefore recommended among other things that for effective application of serials citations analysis as a functional tool for effective serial management, staff of serials unit most partner documentation unit as to ensuring proper citations analysis of serials submitted to the library by every department as this can be used as a guide for the unit to identify the core serials for selections, acquisitions and also as a guide for total serials collections maintenance.
This paper investigated the use of Google and Yahoo search engines in retrieving relevant information resources by Nigerian internet users. It was found that Nigerians prefer the search services of Google to Yahoo. This is because with Google search engine, they are able to retrieve the exact information that they need; they obtain more relevant and adequate information resources than Yahoo; Google is easier to use than Yahoo; and Google retrieves faster than Yahoo. Most Nigerian internet users have personal access through their mobile devices such as mobile phones, lap tops, palm tops etc. It was therefore recommended that Google should incorporate more Nigerian content to their knowledge base as most Nigerians depend on it to meet their information needs; while Telecommunication companies (such as Etisalat, MTN, Globacom, Airtel, Starcoms etc.) that offer internet services to Nigerians should make their services more efficient as they have emerged as the major internet service providers to Nigerians in the 21st century. Nigerian internet users are expected to continually up-date their search engine skills as more and more advances are made in the field of information retrieval.
scite is a Brooklyn-based organization that helps researchers better discover and understand research articles through Smart Citations–citations that display the context of the citation and describe whether the article provides supporting or contrasting evidence. scite is used by students and researchers from around the world and is funded in part by the National Science Foundation and the National Institute on Drug Abuse of the National Institutes of Health.
